Conan (26 y/o Harlequin Macaw)
So, monday I made a trip to Tennesee to pick up a very Handsome Harlequin Macaw who was coming from a pretty rough situation. Conan was picked out by his family when he was still an egg about 26 years ago. Unfortunately, a few years ago his person (the father of the household) started developing health issues, and his ability to care for conan was reduced, and he started plucking.
The fathers daughter then took Conan in, and he started doing better, until the fathers health took a turn for the worse, and the daughter had to spend all her free time taking care of him. Conan started feeling neglected again, and he started pulling his feathers again. This had been going on (from the beginning of the fathers medical problems) for a couple years.
The daughter realized that as much as she hated to see him go (she was 4 when they brought conan home, she grew up with him) that they just couldn't give him the attention he needed to be happy and give her father the care he needed. He is such a character though! He made the entire 5 and a half hour drive home riding backwards on a window perch, merrily staring out the window. Also, showing off for the people who pulled up beside us on interstate to take pictures through the window.
