I was at a friends house yesterday and she had the most spectacular blue female IRN.

I was more taken with their colour rather than their personality.....now this one was not tame, so it was a bit feisty and cage territorial.

But it got me to thinking how amazing they would be as a pet. I'm still searching for another bird since Safari passed away, and never really thought much about them until yesterday.

she made the funniest noises, and I was really taken with her, and thought 'how awesome this bird would be if it were tame'

now for the question- on average are they noisy???? I've watched you-tube videos on their speaking ablility, etc.....

and are they typically a one owner bird or do they go to other members of the family without freaking out AND can they get along with other birds.

I know they are highly intelligent, so can they entertain themselves or do they always want attention?

I keep thinking about this bird:rolleyes:

still looking at options:rolleyes:

helloooooo.....anybody??

I really wanted an IRN and did a lot of research about them. From what I've read they aren't high maintenance, but you do need to spend daily time with them to keep them tame.

I've watched all the YouTube videos and I don't think any of them accurately portrayed how loud they can be. We went to Parrot Festival today and a lady had an adult male lutino on her shoulder. I loved his voice when he talked, so cute! But every so often he would let out a screech. It wasn't long, but for me out was ear piercing. Everyone's tolerance for different parrot yells is different, but for me it would be too much.

well, thank -you for your reply....I was afraid I was going off the radar again....haha

if they are anything like a quaker or large conure then they are not for here, considering my son is mildly autistic, he's can be sensitive to the noise level.

that is why I had to re-home three birds, Ninja, Willow, and Yoshi.

Ok, IRNs are great, great birds.

They're wonderful family birds. They don't form bonds like conures - they like you / a bird, follow that bird/you around, screech sometimes when you leave the room, but for the most part, they're content being in the same room. Kiwi is perfectly find just sitting on the couch, but when I leave he sometimes does a flock call. Even if he does, it's not very long and he gets over it.

He's bonded to me, but readily steps up to anyone and anyone can win him over with food, haha, but he most certainly prefers to stick near me (or my dad since my dad always gives him goodies!).

So in terms of family birds, yes! You will be able to tell who their favorite is, but they can be entertained by anyone, and willing to be.

I don't consider the flock call too loud, and it's pretty easy to direct - they're very smart birds. Like I said, Kiwi does flock call sometimes when I leave the room, but not always, and that seems to be pretty common. I'd say its about the level of a conure, but a bit duller. And if you give them something to play with or eat they will pretty much be quiet all day long.

Yes, very easy to keep content. So long as they know how to play with toys, they will. And they're also happy with playing with other birds,(given they're social, some will attack any bird they see. Kiwi, for example, will stare at doves all day long, but attack them the second they leave the cage).

Also, kiwi doesn't bite full force, and I've heard this by a couple others, too. They don't go full force-rip-of-your-finger unless in a really bad mood. More of a gentle nip. That said they can also try and take off your finger, and some do, so not all will do that, lol. But I think its a lovely trait that Kiwi has.

Basically, they're a good family bird that doesn't bond severely to one person (but will choose a favorite), easily entertained, not much louder than a conure and doesn't screech as often, and can easily be trained. And some don't bite very hard!

they sound entertaining and loving....ok, I'll do some more research....

thanks for the info!

I have had a pair of IRN's and a pair of Sun Conures right next to each other at some point and the conures were definitely a lot more vocal. As other posters have mentioned in other threads: what level of noise you can stand is up to you.

As for biting: of my flock of five only one has the habit of defending "her" territory with her beak. When she is in a bad mood she has the habit of lunging at any bodypart within striking distance but 99.9% of the time she'll aim her strike to either barely miss or to just touch the offending bodypart. She rarely bites down hard enough to inflict pain or draw blood but she has in the past when I didn't heed her warnings.

Hello, I have a female blue ringneck, she just turned three. She only likes me and at times she has a very loud call, we can't hear the t.v. It is ear piercing but she is mainly quiet and does whistle tunes, she has only said Hi so far.

I have an Indian ringneck who is only about 4 months. She rarely makes a noise but when she does scream you better have ear plugs on if its on your shoulder. It's not a continuous scream just a very occasional loud squak when excited.

lisa,

That ear-piercing scream sounds familiar, hehe. Of my flock there's only one that tends to get vocal and that's usually when she feels she's not getting enough attention. The others will make some noise at dawn and dusk but that's it.

Beth, did you decide on whether to get one yet?

yup I decided-, and NO I won't be getting one, even though I think they are breath taking.

I figured I would let fate take over, some where, there is a bird for me out there, who will not replace Safari, but will fill me with such joy just like he did....I'm just patiently waiting for him to find me ;)

And that will be one lucky bird who finds his home with you:)

I've decided on a pair of ringnecks, but I chose Turquoise and Violet, so I have to wait till next breeding season to get them. I am already on a waiting list for them... I can't wait!
