We have our wonderful Buddy after his previous owner passed away last year. My father's nick name is Buddy, so it feels a bit weird calling the parrot Buddy. Has anyone been in a similar scenario where they renamed their feathered friend?

If yes how did that go?

how old is buddy and does he recognize his name? We renamed both of our parrots once we adopted them but they were pretty young and didnt seem attached to their names (my IRN was originally BamBam and my sun conure was Suzy).

He should adjust if you rename him something else...mine did:)

Or you could always find something that sounds similar to buddy....im trying to think of names... Pudding, Muddy, Dudley... i like Dudley! haha :)

When I got my sun Chico, I wasn't "crazy" about his name, so I was going to call him Tiko...problem was I couldn't remember to call him Tiko, so he is still Chico...lol. I guess that didn't go so well.

I do like the name Dudley though...

I have always renamed my pets. I feel that it makes them mine. My Lilac Crowned learned his name immediately and now when I hollar, "ChuChu," he hollars back, "Be quiet." New life, new name, new love. It's all good.

My pets all have lots of different names, because I use different pet names as well as their real names. If he doesn't come when called or respond to his name as a name (as opposed to just being spoken to), I wouldn't worry about calling him something else.

How about Barnaby? Buddy Ebsen played Barnaby Jones and it sounds a bit similar to Buddy so it won't be like suddenly changing it to Sam or something really different.

I'm a name changer too, though with any animal that responds to their name, I try to stay similar. I had a cat go from Minnie to Millie for example.

LOL, Though I love Raven's name and would never change it, hypothetically speaking, I couldn't if I wanted to because not only does he know it's his name, it's his FAVORITE thing to say! "Raaaavven...Raaaven...Raaaaaaaven!!!..." About 30 times lol:11: When he sees Griffin, he often says "hi... Raven" like he's introducing himself haha.

LOL, I started cracking up at Chu Chu and Raven they are funny. Husband isn't helping, he has a list of bad name suggested like Punk, and a list of other unfriendly names. My mother suggested naming him popcorn since that is his favorite treat. We have nick names for him like the green sound machine, the green pig, the green demon, but I like names. I use to visit a shop that had a cockatoo named Paco and he loved putting on a show. So I like Paco but he doesn't look like a Paco to me. Our dogs are Canelo the bulldog named after husband's favorite boxer, Chug and Lola the pugs. I wanted to name Chug Frank ( MIB movie) but got over ruled.

If you don't care about it being similar in sound, then it's open slather.....

Describe his personality and what he likes to do. The name needs to fit the person.

Kiwi's name was "Tiki" when he came to me. I didn't care for that, but I didn't want to change it too drastically, so I picked something with a similar sound. I don't know that he really responds to his name at all, but just to being talked to in general - so in his case it doesn't seem to matter.

LOL we were talking about Nutty last night and called him Nutty to see how he responded. We got the same response when we call Buddy. I even called him Nutty Buddy and told him Nutty Buddy's are good. Husband called him another name for Donkey and I told him to stop because knowing our luck, he'd start saying it and repeating it often when we don't want him too. I reminded him of the 4 year old that remember one word from when I was talking about Brendan Frazier in Bedazzled as a Columbian drug lord. What does she remember? Cociana which is cocaine in Spanish. That's what she popped up with, but by the end of dinner it was coke I leena. He got the point about Buddy then.

Nutty Buddy. I like it:) I was so torn when we got Kiwi to change his name, but scared he knew it, so I left it. Now I seriously doubt that was always his name because he doesn't respond to Kiwi any better to being called anything else. But after years in our home being called Kiwi, it would kind of be ridiculous to change it now:(

You haven't had Buddy very long, so if your going to change his name, change it soon:)

How about Jerryor Eddie after either Jerry Lewis or Eddie Murphy, who played the roles in the Nutty Professor where the professor turns into Buddy Love? He could still be Nutty or Buddy or Buddy Love as pet names, but have a proper person name as well.
