Indian ringneck colours

I am a hopeless macaw fan, BUT I am thinking about getting some IRN's as well.

I would be really grateful, if you could tell and show me the different IRN colours. What is the "natural" colour?

Are the colours different species or are they variations within the breed? Ie. is it a hybrid, if two colours breed?

I hope you can help a hopefully future IRN owner to have as much information as possible to make the right choice before purchasing another bird

The natural color is green, and the color variations are simply mutations within the species. As far as showing them to you, there are hundreds so a google image search is your best bet.

However if Macaws are what you love, I don't suggest Ringnecks. As a breeder I often have people say things to me like "I've narrowed it down to a conure or a Ringneck" to which I reply "then you haven't narrowed it down at all."

Ringnecks (and other asiatic species like alexandrines) are as different from macaws as you can get. I have two "really snuggly" Ringnecks; that means I have two that allow me to give them scritches and pets every now and then. No snuggles, no nuzzles, no puppy-dog style playing, wrestling, rolling on the back, beak play, etc. they are NOTHING like macaws and if you expect them to be you will be majorly disappointed.

Thank you for your great insight. I have had rosellas and they can be cuddly, but not mushy mushy as the macaws. I had an idea, that the IRN's are similar to the rosellas, is that wrong??

I like the rosellas for their intelligence and their trainability (they will do anything for a treat, whereas the macaws are a little more like "hmmm what's in it for me"), however they are really difficult to mimic human voices. I was under the impression, that the IRN were like the rosellas with the added bonus, that they can mimic human voices.

Which colours does the IRNs come in? I've seen green, yellow, blue and albino. Are there more colours?

As far as I know IRNs are nothing like rosellas. However since I've never had a rosella I can't say definitively. Ringnecks are extremely crafty, stubborn, mischievous , etc. they are usually not snugly at all. Some allow pets and head scritches, many do not. Usually only babies will give you anything more than that.

Some Ringnecks mimic, many do not. There is absolutely no guarantee, much less even than a macaw.

They do however have a very loud, piercing, high pitched call that you should be sure to hear before getting one.

Also, like I said above, Ringnecks come in hundreds of colors and patterns. You should just google image search "Indian Ringneck mutations"

WOW what an amazin aray of colours!

Can you tell me the name of the colour of this one;

SilverSage; What are your experiences training your IRN's?

I have added a video of me training a rosella (this is just a juvenile and not far in his training). This is the sort of training I am aiming for. The rosellas will train for a long time as long as they get treats. They learn relatively quickly.

If the IRN's are not as fond of training as the rosellas, you may be right, that the IRN's are not for me

I believe that is a clear head clear tail violet.

And honestly my Ringnecks are not very treat oriented. They don't like to pay attention that long, and they would rather be off causing mischief than cooperating lol. They are VERY SMART so I'm not saying they can't learn tricks, I'm saying mine don't know any. However if that's something really important to you, I would definitely make sure you get a solid answer before proceeding. Sorry I can't give a detailed one here, tricks just aren't important to me. Also the video isn't playing for me for some reason. Not sure why.
