Gimpy - 8 year-old, female, grey, ringneck parrot
Hi everyone - I have always wanted a parrot, so when my daughter announced that she had volunteered our family to take the highschool biology classes ringneck parrot "Gimpy" I was pretty excited.

Here's the thing, she hates most men, and me in particular. She's about eight years old and has been in a classroom setting most of her life. We guess that she had a very bad experience with a janitor, judging by her reaction to things like brooms and mops, the sound of jangling and the terror of rolling carts. She loves my daughter and my wife, but despite giving her treats, speaking gently and moving slowly around her she shows no signs of accepting me. She's terrified and shrieks and squawks whenever I am in her general vicinity. I reiterate that I have never treated her with anything but gentleness.

I should also note that she is a savage biter, and seems to have quite a temper (if that is possible) which is one reason the teacher likely had to get rid of her (although she's actually too terrified to even try and bite me.)

Looking to all of you expert parrot lovers for advice on how to win her over.

Man hating ringneck

Hi everyone, I posted this on the newcomer forum, before I spotted this species specific forum ... apologies for the redundancy! I have always wanted a parrot, so when my daughter announced that she had volunteered our family to take the highschool biology classes ringneck parrot "Gimpy" I was pretty excited.

We guess that she had a very bad experience with a janitor, judging by her reaction to things like brooms and mops, the sound of jangling keys and the terror of rolling carts. She loves my daughter and my wife, but despite giving her treats, speaking gently and moving slowly around her she shows no signs of accepting me. She's terrified and shrieks and squawks whenever I am in her general vicinity.

Looking to all of you expert parrot lovers for advice on how to win her over.

Can take a very long time . Your best bet is to do what your doing and be consistent . Move her cage right by where you sit. Then she can observe you all the time . Your relationship may develop different than the rest of your family. Be happy with what shes willing to give . Treat her like a Celebrity [really gush over her] . Had your situation at my house many times [and this is what Dave does].
