I have an orange wing amazon named Darwin. He's 31 and awesome.

This last week has been horrible. My African Grey was due to be clipped and I foolishly let him sit on top of his cage with his buddy (orange-wing amazon) while I went to fill their bowls. When I came back he was gone and Darwin was acting as though he would take off if he could. We put up flyers within the hour. Today we received a call that he had been found and he was dead. My husband went to get him and buried him before I got home.

I use to question whether my birds might be happier if they lived in the wild. I live in Hawaii, so the climate is perfect for parrots. Today, confirmed for me that a parrot that's a pet should never be allowed to escape because they don't know how to forage for themselves. I'm completely crushed and it's even worse knowing that it was my fault. He was the sweetest bird and Darwin has been very depressed.

Please keep your parrots clipped so that you won't have to go through this and so they can live long and happy lives with you. :(

I am so sorry for your loss! It must have been awful for you :(

Do not blame yourself though!! sometimes things happen that are beyond our control.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I would also add , that if you keep clipped birds ,learn how to clip them yourself so you can do it when needed.

i am so sorry for your loss. and even birds who are clipped have flown into danger or injured themselves on hard landings. accidents do happen. :( my bird died in a freak accident in her own cage. try not to be too hard on yourself.
