Male Solomon Island Eclectus - Louie
Hello everyone. I am new to this site and looking to find a gluten free solution for me and my 11 yr old male eclectus, Louie. I've had him since he was 5 months old.

Within the last couple of years I have become highly sensitive to gluten and cannot, or should I say, will not get rid of him. He's my baby and I cannot imagine living without him. He is on Harrison's Adult Lifetime Course which has been working great for him. I finally realized that my skin issues on my face are from contact with the food, either from my hands touching my face, or from Louie giving me kisses on my cheeks.

Does anyone have suggestions as to the types seeds, etc. and sources of where to buy so I can make a blend or do you have a recipe for pellets/cookies?

Actually, with eckies it's recommended they get the majority of their nutrition from fresh foods and while grains. Pellets are great for most parrots but due to their extra long digestive systems as well as some other things, the synthetic vitamins and minerals found in most pellets can build up in their system causing a dangerous and life threatening condition called hypervitaminosis.

My suggestion would be to switch him off any sort of pellet and go with mostly fresh and cooked or sprouted gluten free grains such as (I believe) oats and quinoa. Remember to focus on natural sources of vitamin A.

Clearly, start using disposable gloves! This will provide a separation with your hands. Next, use a Kleenex (tm) like product to wipe his bill after he as eaten. If you teach this properly, he will /may line-up after eating for his bill wipe!

Now, the hard part. There is likely nothing currently available that targets Gluten Free Parrot Food in general and Eclectus Food as a specific group. There is currently just not enough demand. I have a family member that requires a gluten free diet. And, her battle is that with Human specific food, gluten free is still rare.

As a suggestion, I would reverse the process working from what you know is safe for you too handle and look at creating a recipe from there. Remember that ingredients are listed by volume from the most being the first listed. Most recipes are very similar with minor change to create specific flavor or texture. Consider the vast variation there is with the simple Chocolate Chip Cookie as an example.

Check out the Forum with Parrot Food, Recipes and Diet - make small batches and adjust so both of you like the final results.

Enjoy!
