I'm scared that my bird will die...

My green cheek conure, Shado, is only 2 years old, and today she was hanging out on top of my door lik she usually does. I didn't see her there though, and I went to close my door and I didn't see what happened, but she panicked and flew across the room onto the floor. She was breathing heavy and flopping around. She then flew across the room into the wall and started screeching in a tone I never heard from her before. I picked her up and she was still screeching so I quickly took her to the vet down the street. They said her wings and legs look fine. She can perch good, and doesn't seem disoriented. They told me to just take her home and watch her for the next few days. Being that it was close to 9pm when I got her home. I put her to bed. She seemed fine and was very cuddly with me. She seemed tired which I'm hoping was from the stress of it all. She ate a yogurt drop I gave her (her favorite treat), and now she's in her usual spot resting/sleeping.

I'm just so scared of head trauma or waking up to find her dead. She's my baby, I love her so much and I'm scared that she won't live.

Maybe I'm being overly dramatic and panicked, but I can't lose her.

I guess I'm just looking for some advice or comfort. Thanks

I'm so sorry you and Shado had such a terrifying experience. No matter how careful we are, accidents happen, you reacted immediately and took her to the closest vet. It's hard to say exactly what happened that scared her so much since you didn't actually see the accident. It's pretty safe to think the vet felt confident enough to send her home after only doing a physical exam. If you are worried that she may have internal injuries or head trauma, you might consider an appointment with an Avian specialist. If she is perching and appears to be normal in every way, she will probably be fine. If she had severe injuries, you would more than likely see symptoms.

I hope Shado is back to normal after a good night's sleep. Hugs to you and your girl, please let us know how she does.

Thank you everyone for your responses! Shado is doing good this morning. I kept checking on her throughout the night, and today she seems back to normal. The vet told me to remove all the perches from her cage last night, which you can imagine she hates. I had to put her bridge perch she normally sleeps on back up because she kept climbing to the top of the cage and trying to sleep clinging to the sides. She's not a fan of her food and water bowl on the floor of her cage either so I might put that back up as well... The vet says she needs to be watched closely the next couple days, but I'm really hoping she's ok!

Hey everyone. Shado seems to be okay, but I am a bit concerned because she is still a bit lethargic. She is eating and drink, and isn't dizzy. I called the vet, and they said that I should turn the heat up in my room or purchase a heat lamp to keep her warm. I am a bit concerned about doing this though, because I read that if she has brain swelling then turning the heat up would be the worst thing for her. However, it has been almost 48 hours since her incident, so she might not have any brain swelling. I'm just wondering if you think I should turn the heat up? I tried calling another vet but their avian specialist isn't in the office until tomorrow. Thanks

I don't have personal experience with concussion, but I can at least give you my perspective.

Bird's body heat is 106 degrees F, and why you keep them heated when they are ill is so that they don't have to waste their energy producing as much body heat, especially if they are not eating and not generating much new energy.

I think you can leave temperature at whatever is normal, because Shado isn't that kind of ill. She is recovering and nourishing herself, so she is able to produce her body heat normally.

It's normal after a head trauma to be lethargic for a few days...

As long as he's eating and drinking, and doesn't appear to be having balance problems, he's probably okay. Honestly, there isn't a whole lot they can do for a birdie concussion. There isn't much a vet can tell you at this point.

If he had a brain bleed from it, he would have most likely keeled over from the increased intercranial pressure by now. If it hasn't happened by now, it's pretty safe to assume he's not going to.

I'm speaking from experience here, two amazons with concussions from flying into a window. Both are still alive and kicking...
