I would love to learn a little more about cockatoos, I just bought one she is about five years old...she is very friendly but at times she bites and very hard can anybody give me some advice :)

We are happy to have you here Angie. Do you have any large parrot experience and what kind of too did you purchase?
You picked a complicated bird with complex needs. While I do not have a Too I do have knowledge of them as I did extensive research on parots before purchasing my TAG Rosie. The biting behavior is a learned behavior. The main thing is do not let the bird see you react to the bite and I know that is very difficult with such a large beak. I give you the name of a very good book to learn about parrot care. Parrots for Dummies. It has tons of good information it is and I still refer to it many times. Sending you some sites for more information on toos. They can be sweet and loving and want that back from you too. Good luck!!

Welcome to the forum. Good advice from SB (as per usual). It's really hard not to react to the biting, but it's the best way to go. With our red-front, if she bites, she gets a time-out, either on her perch or on her swing. She doesn't get any attention when she bites - that's the worst thing in her mind.

Hi and welcome. Great advise from SB. I have the Parrot for Dummies book too and have refered to it heaps over the years. One of the things you could do is try to read your birds body language, it may help you with avoiding a potential bite. Toos are fantastic for this as they have a crest which is so expressive & makes reading them so much easier. The link below gives you a brief outline on body language which may help

Welcome, and good luck with your new Umbrella cockatoo! They are beautiful and exciting birds. Some good suggestions have already been made; can't think of anything to add to them.
