I have wanted a caique since I got my first bird...when I was 12! I saw how ridiculous and rowdy they were and have had my eyes on them ever since. I now have two conures and two ringnecks at my house, and a TAG at my boyfriends house. I hear that caiques don't get along with other birds well, but his previous owner says that he doesn't mind other birds. I will be quarantining him from my other birds for a while, but eventually I would like him to go into my bird room. I don't want any fights though!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me more! I have read EVERYTHING I can find and watched videos and looked at pictures. I just want to be completely prepared for when I bring him home on Wednesday. Anything in particular they cannot eat? (besides the list of things that all birds can't eat), do they enjoy baths?, are they hard biters?, do they have dandruff?, ANYTHING you have to tell me would be awesome!

Thanks so much and I am loving being a bird owner. I will continue to rescue and adopt as long as I am alive! I love feathered friends!

I know one that loves bath and gets along great with other birds. He thinks he is a big bird and has a cockatoo as his best friend. They were both born about the same time and kept in the same cage as babies and get along great. It all depends on the bird if they like other birds.

My Caique gets along great with my Pionus. She is not aggressive towards any birds we have. But she Loooves to bother the Green Cheek Conures!!! They are feisty and I think she likes to get them mad ahah. She just wants to play with all the birds but she is rough so they mostly fly away from her. My male Conure stands his ground sometimes so they can fight a bit but it's more the Conure that will bite her than the other way around.

Mine likes to bath, loves to be outside. She is not a biter but yes she can bite hard. No dandruff. They love to dunk food into their bowl....just the way they like it and it's okay...just have to change the water bowl. Mine will tend to try and eat more things if she can dunk so it is good. My conures do that also.

Good luck with your new Caique. They are great clowns!!!:)

My caique is home! He needs his beak and nails trimmed ASAP. One of his nails is curled almost back to his foot. He is not in good feather condition either. He looks oily and rough. He keeps regurgitating his food too. Sometimes he will eat it, and other times he just flings it around. I am very worried about him! I have named him Oyster though.

It's probably a good idea to get him checked by an Avian vet, considering all the "problems" ....Hope everything's OK with the little guy!:)

lol yea i looked at the caique as well but the thing that made me say no was other peoples stories of how much work they are they have A LOT of ENERGY,and they are aggressive when they play which could mean biting you in play mode but it still hurts.

I got him to the vet. They said he is completely over preened. He has like 2 feathers that aren't chewed up and the rest are all messed up. His regurgitation is out of love so far, but if that changes in the next week we will be doing a bacterial swab to see if he has something wrong. He has been great fun so far. The only biting has been on my shirt and lite bites when he doesn't want to return to his cage. He loves to sit on my shoulder and preen my hair and cuddle up to my neck. He always wants to be near me. He's so sweet and cuddly! The only thing that he can say is 'hello baby' and it is very mumbly. All the rest of the things he says are indeterminable, haha. I am very happy to have him and I hope to get him in tip top shape!

Hang in there! Cute little Oyster! What a great name. I bet he looks so tender with his over-preening! I hope he gets better soon for you and for him. I just wanted to say that coincidentally the biggest thing my Louis says is "Hey Babies." He says it to my kids over and over again every morning when they take his cage cover off.

Best Wishes!
Elizabeth

How is little Oyster doing? I'd have been worried about the regurgitation thing but hopefully it really is love.

Is he settling in well?

He is doing great! He is COVERED in pin feathers and all the old chewed up ones are slowing coming out. He still regurgitates for me whenever we cuddle. If I click or talk in a higher voice he tries to feed me. If I make kissy noises he puts his beak to my mouth and makes them back! He is so sweet. He has gotten a little nippy for some reason. He used to let me turn him upside down or grab him in my hands but now he doesn't enjoy it. He will still wrestle with me though!
