My husband has just told me that while I was doing housework today someone came and put an ad in our shop window for 2 lovebirds plus their cage for the paltry sum of £40. He was basically half enquiring as to whether there was any possibility....? :(

For some reason, I can't stop thinking about them.

Dave said he asked why they were being sold to be told: Not really bovvered wiv em now.

Charming.

I wish wish WISH we could take them but I have a thousand reasons it's not practical. A lot to do with Cal and how she'd feel - she's only just landed on my of her own accord this afternoon and she's got her little routine...how would she feel at two other birds being around?

A lot to do with the fact I have to make plenty time for the dogs, cat and rabbit too so THEY all know they're loved too....I've had to make sure everyone knows Cal is an addition, not a replacement lol.

I know I could learn, but I don't know anything about lovebirds and their needs....I've never researched them.

I'm just so sad because the people around here are mainly benefit dole dossers whose children can't even read or do simple maths. That's just the truth. We've been here nearly 2 years and the only people we trust enough to have as friends are OTHER people from outside the area.
I'm so worried some idiot will have them as entertainment for 5mins like the idiot selling them in the first place. The worst part is, he won't care who has them as long as they can dregde up a whole £40!

I'm sorry for whining, there's no solution to this and I know you can't give me any answers.

I just wish I had more arms, more time in the day and be able to be in numerous places at once.

I know you'll understand here and that's why I'm rambling at you!!!

Thanks for listening.

:(

Poor babies, I hate that. I cringe every time I see an add like that. It's so hard wanting to save every single one from someone who thinks "Look, a bird, let's buy it and not think twice about what it might need horray!" and knowing it's just not possible. Love birds are fun, and not nearly as demanding as 'toos or macaws, but of course they still need attention and love. I bet if you think it over hard you'll know in your heart weather they're right for you in your situation or not
Also, keep in mind even if you can't adopt them you could spread the word to others who could, maybe someone you know would be a good home, or maybe you could even take them in temporarily until one's found? There may even be rescues near you that would buy them. Where there's a will, there's a way!
I hope it all works out and good luck!!! = )

Thankyou.

I have a couple of people in mind to ask. Lovely retired couples from down the road who admire Cal every time they come in.....I just hope it's not too late. If I fostered them - they'd be staying!!!!

There's no domestic bird centre anywhere near here, sadly. In fact, there's a distinct lack in the UK.

I wish I could take them but Cal's only been here 5 weeks tomorrow. I feel like I should think of her first....you know?

Ugh, so sad! </3

How sad. :( The sad fact is is we can't take on the parrot troubles of the world, I only wish we could! Von, if you took on these lovebirds it would only be a matter of time before you heard of or witnessed another wanting bird. If only people thought it through before buying a sweet baby bird.

@Madparrotwoman: I like your Mark Twain quote.

I know! :(

I feel the same about all animals! Dogs, cats, small furries....everything. When we're older and have made some serious pennies we're adament we will have a lot of land, huge house and create a private rescue centre. Here's hoping we'll manage. I looked around for rescue birds before we got Cal but I was unsuccessful. Unless you count "can't be bothered with bird anymore, £1000 for the lot".

With todays statistics I try and remember that any animal you take home can be counted as a rescue because who knows where they'd end up? Like the litter Olly come from was 8 pups. I read that 1 in 3 ends up in the dogs home. It could have been him. But with them all here, I KNOW that will never happen.

It just saddens me to the core. Just because a pet costs you an affordable amount to buy, it doesn't end there. We had an outbreak of parvo in the area this summer. I mean, PARVO! It should be one of those "olden day" diseases by now! There's a preventative vaccine! But no, you pay for the dog and that's it, it can eat what you eat. We've had SIX dogs wander into the shop to date. Strays or ones who live in the back garden. Right next to a main road. It's repulsive.

Sorry, I just get SO bloody cross!

People just don't think about their animals in the long run. It's easy to take the free to good home puppy and then it ends up getting pregnant 6 months later only to go to the pound along with the puppies, who get adopted only to have the same thing happen over and over.
If it's any consolation, I know exactly how you feel. And there is NOTHING in my opinion more rewarding than rescuing.
Just a few months ago we kept seeing dead kittens in our neighborhood, people were doing horrible things to them... No one would help, out of desperation we called the police and animal control who said "oh i guess they got hit by lightning". Animal control here... well there are things about them I can't say on a friendly forum... Then someone claimed to chase off the mothers "To solve the problem" (I fear they did worse as we never saw them again) we couldn't stand it anymore and took every single one we could find in. We had a few heartbreaks, but managed to save most of them and don't regret a moment. We even made a video with all the ads in our area and the story behind the kittens to try and educate people to spay and neuter.
I thought you might like to see this, as it's sad but touching that even the "lost causes" can pull through and show there really is no lost cause. Now they've all been re homed, spayed and neutered. = )

Oh well done you!!!! That was an amazing thing to do. Thankyou for sharing it with me. (I shed a few tears and then more when Lucy gazed at me and wrapped round my feet)

I'm so glad 8 lil ones made it. So sad about lil blue eyes that didn't. :( All my pets are spayed/neutered. Not just the babies at risk of ending up mistreated or homeless, but I'd never risk MY babies lives with cancer or complications due to giving birth.

I can't believe the vileness of some "human beings". People say it's cruel to keep a cat indoors. Well, Lucy came from a hellhole, too young to leave her mum, timid, frightened but thankfully unharmed. I'd rather keep her at home, safe than risk her trusting some unmentionable person who would hurt her for "fun."

There's been many cases here of tying fireworks to tails and all sorts. I can't talk about it, I'm too upset, genuinely!
