I'm afraid I did a terrible mistake

Willie was a parakeet, my best friend for 18 years. The night he died, he was so weak that he had trouble perching, so I made a cradle for him with a bowl and some of my clothes, and put the cradle next to my bed. I found him dead at 2am. Now I'm afraid he suffocated himself with the clothes. Should've I let him sleep on my chest instead?

From what I've read 18 years is a very old canary winged parakeet!
Sounds like you loved him very much, it's unlikely he suffocated, it was his time to go to heaven and he probably went peacefully in his sleep.
I'm so sorry for your loss, you can't predict these things, losing a parrot is always so hard, like there's no way a shining star that is a parrot can ever go out.
I hope you can look back on your memories with him and smile.

I am so sad, I too had a BeeBee or canary wing parrot, like yours, pass unexpectedly. My Maxie was a super nice friendly one and we still miss him horribly. But yes, he likely passed peacefully in his sleep. Fly free little one, say Hi to Max for us.

I think he felt very comforted and peaceful in his cradle and felt very safe being able to let go with you there.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Your bird was very cute. I'm sure you miss him a ton.

I really don't think there was much you could do. I think letting him rest in the cradle was a good idea. I highly doubt he suffocated, I think he peacefully went in his sleep.

It was just his time to go. But it's still very sad that he had to pass away.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I think like others above - I found somewhere info that orange chinned parakeets live about 15 years, so it's very likely that it was his time to leave.
You didn't make a mistake (a mistake would be letting him to sleep on your chest because sleeping with a fid is dangerous, so you made a good choice)

You gave him a rich and wonderful life and he passed while loved and adored, and nearby his true love. I will someday face the loss of my ancient Patagonian rooster. I don’t think you did ANYTHING wrong. I think it was just his time to go.

But I realize you feel bad. When my Quaker passed at 24 I asked myself what I could have done differently but…it was going to happen soon. My bird was very sore and crippled from her hard life. I am sorry I wasn’t holding her when she passed but how could I have known?

But how beautiful and cute he is and had a long life. I lost a conure and it was probably my fault,but can't be sure, because I didn't make a mental note of looking at his water dispenser to be sure it wasn't malfunctioning. I don't know why your baby would have suffocated under clothes, because he would have had an air pocket I would think. You know, there is no good time for God to take our babies, no matter how beautiful and peaceful that rainbow bridge is and what angels are standing by to escort them. Your did your job extremely well as his parent.

Please don't beat yourself up! It was most likely his time to go and you made his last hours full of comfort and love! A bird won't suffocate like you fear- he would get out from under the blankets.
