Berry (♀ Cockatiel) hatched June 2017
Opal (♂ Budgie) hatched 13 August 2017
Pearl (♀ Budgie) hatched 15 August 2017
+ an aviary of 16 other budgies! all hatched 2014-2017
So, I have a double decker cage. My budgies (Pearl and Opal) stay in the top part, and my cockatiel (Berry) stays in the bottom part. It’s MASSIVE, with the two separate parts allowing them to have so much space for toys, perches, etc.

My birds spend some mornings in their outdoor cage outside when I am at university, and when I am at home they spend the rest of the day with me out of the cage. All three share the outdoor cage, and all get along really well - they share toys, bath together, eat together and play. When they come inside, they all fly in and out of the budgie cage, including Berry, with no issues. They really only sleep in separate cages.

Today it’s a bit chilly, and as we move into winter it will get even colder - Berry is not a fan of being alone, so my mom and I decided to try put her with the budgies this morning, in their top cage. My mom was supervising, and said Berry was very happy, and everyone was playing so nicely.

So, now onto my question.

The cage can be converted into one large cage (you can just remove the trays dividing the top from the bottom). It will then be the size of a decent aviary.

Since my birds are so relaxed with each other, do you think it would be advisable to combine Berry’s cage with Pearl and Opal’s cage? They will have so much more space and I can design the cage in new and interesting ways, and since they get along so well, I am not too worried about aggression.

However, I am still in two minds, because I have always lived by the rule that you should separate species.

So, to the many educated and wonderful people here on the forums, what are your opinions on this matter?

I would give ti a try under supervision and see if they enjoy themselves. Both being smaller aussie species they most likely interact in the wild together. Prepare for a little bickering and of course if a fight breaks out then separate them

I would proceed with caution but it is possible. My concern would be the budgies picking on your cockatiel, but that's just my experience with two of my fosters, a budgie and a cockatiel that were raised together. Other than a little bickering, they get along just fine but don't really interact besides sitting together.

It has definitely been a success thus far. No issues between the three at all which is great!

So I thought I’d post some pictures of their new set up!

p.s. I know some people do not recommend rope perches, but I replace mine regularly and my birds have never had any issues with them - that’s just my personal experience!

That looks great! Just out of interest, do they use the lower section much?

Yes! they have started to explore it a lot, which is nice to see!:D

It looks great and theres nothing wrong with rope perches to help keep feet healthy. Variety is good for them x

What a palace! And what a great lifestyle your birds have.

Yeah, the Rb gets his nails caught in rope or mesh, but most birds love ropes and boings.

I like that ladder... are the rungs textured? Where did you buy it, please?

The cage setup is wonderful and my birds love their rope perches! I just replaced a 4-year-old rope perch that I’ve had since I got Bluebell, and there really was no reason to replace it! There were minimal loose threads and it’s still completely functional. Those things can last forever! I have them in all my birds’ cages and they remain a favorite among them.
