Marty-Jardine's Parrot
Hello everyone! Tonight was a roller coaster of emotions, but I sure am overjoyed now! Today my fiance and I decided that we wanted to bring the little Jardines we met at a local bird store into our home. He stole my heart when I first met him and when we went to "just visit the birds" today he captured my fiance's heart by some feat of Poi magic. We left happy, but both of us secretly thinking about the repercussions of bringing him home. We spent 10 minutes walking through Lowes, looking at new carpet before my fiance decided that he was going to buy him for my birthday to my utter shock. Not the type of guy to wait around, we agreed to call the shop right then to see if they would give a bit on his insanely high price tag. They declined, and I pretended not to be devastated. It was unrealisitc anyway, and right as I was about to type out a sad, self-pity post on here...the phone rang.

They had called back, and agreed to sell him for the price we offered so long as we agreed to spoil him rotten and bring him back for regular visits. (That was an easy decision on our part! Duh!) So after bawling my eyes out, hollering at my fiance asking "what in the hell was he on/who was he and where was the love of my life," my fiance insisted upon making the hour drive down to him and picking him up tonight!

There are so many worries running though our minds, most of them regarding how Kippy will react to a new bird. However, we are sure we can still make her feel like the princess of her castle while enjoying a second companion parrot. SO, without further adieu, I present Marty the Jardines Parrot!! The most expensive cracker recycle bin ever!

Yes sir!! Marty is in the bedroom and Kippy is in the rest of the house. He kind of made a grand entrance (we had planned on hiding him from Kippy for a while), but I forgot not all birds are OK with dogs and my two terrified him when we walked in the house. So he took a frantic flap around the living room before we caught him and plopped him into his bin for the night. :D

Anyways, Kippy knows he's here but we plan on keeping him isolated for a few weeks. We are both obsessive hand washers so we should have no cross contamination. Hopefully! She was a bit of a prude when we got settled in and went over to cuddle her, but I am not sure if it was because of Marty or because we were not home much today...:( I will be sure to spoil her rotten tomorrow!

Congratulations! That is wonderful news! She is adorable!

:D MANY many congrats!!! This is AWESOME! I just had a hunch about this, and I'm SO happy you got Marty. :D Your fiancé deserves THE biggest kiss and hug in the world. Sometimes our partners surprise us in the nicest ways, don't they? I never thought in a million years my hubby was going to help me get Ripley, so when he said "If that's what you really want", I literally fell out of my flip flops.

Marty is BEAUTFUL!!! :)

Thank you so much!! I gave him a HUGE hug and told him it was from Wendy with the Macaws. We had watched your videos together and he laughed when I read your post to him! He says it all you guy's fault!

I think we both knew when we saw him that we would be taking him home! I had never seen a Jardines, and I had never seen one for sale in my area. I knew I wanted one more bird, and I had talked myself into another Sennie (for Kippy's safety) when I really wanted a slightly larger bird. When we met him, and he was such a relaxed little dude, we were smitten!

Kippy is as of now, enraged, she knows he is here (kind of hard to hide a squeaking baby in a very small house) and this morning she threw the tantrum of the century. She became upset and started biting, nipping, and just being a very angry little green banana. My fiance has been handling Marty off and on throughout the day (two peas), and I have been glued to Kippy. She is coming around now, and I think she is feeling much better about the whole thing...though she sneaked a peak at his cage (A.k.a-She snuck into the bedroom through the bathroom, landed on his cage, and threw him the stare of doom through the bars) and does not appreciate that he has the bigger place!

Does anyone have any tips on making her feel special or minimizing the adjustment period when we finally introduce them? We plan on keeping him in the bedroom for a month or two, before moving his cage across the house from hers; keeping in mind that we have 900 square feet to work with. Once we feel she is comfortable with the adjustment and with Marty the idea is to keep their cages side-by-side. Kippy has been kept in a semi-aviary setting before, with a Macaw, a Goffins, and two African Greys which were all allowed free roam of a (lovely) shed. We know she is not aggressive, but we also know she was 'The Boss' of her previous flock. Does anyone have any suggestions for eventual introductions?

Oh, and we have been debating about keeping Marty's wings clipped for a few months until we are comfortable with him. He has face planted into a closed window three times already, and again, I want to be sure Kippy is safe. She is fully flighted, so if anything goes wrong she can fly away. Does anyone have an opinion on this? She is just so much smaller than him, and his beak is comically huge!

And for the grand finale of this wall of text, Marty is a "bird candy" hound. When we bought him we were given a mix of ZuPreem and what I call "bird candy" which is just a mix of seeds, dried fruit, and all the goodies birds cant resist. I want to switch him over to what I feed Kippy which is a diet of fresh veggies, fruits, various grains, legumes, sprouts, and supplemental Harrison's Bird Food. However, I don't want to throw a recently weaned baby off of his food. I switched Kippy over cold turkey, with the mindset of eat now, or go hungry, and then eat...she was loving Harrison's within two weeks. I am sure that is not the preferred method, particularly with a baby, but I know he would never eat his Harrison's Pellets over his super sweet and yummy bird candy. I want to start switching him over in a weeks time, any suggestions?

UUUUHHH...I would have loved to have played fly on the wall when Kippy gave Marty the death stare of "HOW did you end up in here. And WHY do you have the bigger adobe?" :D

I think it's a great idea with the wings. Once they get to know each other, and hopefully accept each other (hey, I don't want to jynx it and say "become BFFs") you can let Marty's wings grow out, too.

Since Marty is such a young one, I think he'll take to change in his diet rather quickly. I mean WHAT bird can resist sprouts and fresh fruits and veggies? :D He may make a mess at first, not knowing their supposed to go into the belly rather than on the wall, but I'm sure he'll get it rather sooner than later.

Thank you so much!! Your posts keep me in such a great mood! Kippy actually tolerated me holding him (Marty) today without getting upset by it, which is a HUGE improvement! Everything is going much better than expected, and my fiance is in looove with Marty...though Kippy has reverted to hating him with a burning passion (he is no longer among the privileged few whom are allow to bask in her radiance and breathe her air).

I tried to make his breakfast irresistible, and he was munching on it like a mad man. :)

Awww!!!! So adorable!! I'm still working in the whole rounded diet thing haha

Quick and easy healthy meal is a generous cup of Couscous, a cup of water, and 1/2 of a small can of low sodium corn. Drain the water out of the corn, toss the corn in with the water, bring to a boil, add the couscous and let sit for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork, and instant parrot delight! I throw in some sprouts, or just soaked legumes, and viola, a balanced meal!

My Senegal is very very angry right now. Which is just awful, but I am hoping that she pops out of it soon! Marty is just making LOTS of baby noises, begging for food and cuddles. But when we pick him up his baby chirps get very loud and continuous...so we are limiting our interaction for a few days to let him settle in.
