So here comes trouble. We've had Papito for about 2 months now, and the last week or so I've noticed a big change in his personality. He used to stick in his cage or on top of his cage, now hes coming out of his cage and wandering around the bay window area where his cage sits. He's trying to chew apart the plastic drawers i have sitting there and tear into the clothes in it. Last night when i tried to do his nighttime routine, he wasnt happy. He did not want to go in his cage, he grabbed the top of the door and came right back out. Every time he tries sneaking over to chew on the drawers i call his name and he gives me that look..."im not doing aaaaanything". He has also picked up on a lot of new words and is using them all the time, which is good. Hes become very....independent, lol. Is this normal? Should i brace for him to become a holy terror? :D

Be proud that you are such a great owner, and that he is now so comfortable. Quiet, meek birds are rarely happy birds! Terrors are part of the joy of birds.

I do not remember how old your bird is but he may be entering into the adolescent years. It can be tricky because we must let them grow up and be safe in the process. They can be rebellious and refuse to conform. Kind of like our human teenagers. Just remember it is a phase that will pass. They need to express autonomy within their core behaviors that you have already taught. Allow safe choices in his everyday life and all should be fine.

Hes 9...so i think hes well past it. Im actually glad hes becoming independent and a bit of trouble, lol. It will definitely make things more exciting.

That's awesome that he's gotten to that stage. I see Kawie getting there eventually as well. He allows more and more everyday. Lil bugger talks to everyone BUT my wife and I though. But is more interactive with us, as far as kisses and letting us get very close etc. Almost like a rebellious teen that refuses to perform on demand, lol. He has picked up words from me already though that my kids are telling me he is saying when we are at work or the store.

As far as Papito, one of the suggestions Kawie's former owner had was to move the cage just out of reach of the areas you dont want him chewing on... they also had plexiglass on the wall behind his cage that was close enough for him and his roommate at the time to chew on the drywall. She came over to see him and saw we had him near our bay window as well and suggested pulling the cage just out of reach enough that he couldnt destroy the wood that accents the bottom of the window.
