Although it probably seems weird, I really wanted to work at a pet store. This isn't my ultimate goal but as a job for a university student I'm very happy.

My favorite thing is being able to educate people on birds(and fish). The other day someone came in and I was called up to the front to tell them which medication(respiratory infection or vitamins meds) to giver their cockatiel. It was pretty horrible, and I'm glad I was working then. They told me there bird was sitting on the bottom fluffed up.

Right away I told them if there bird is actually showing signs of illness that it was very sick, and I couldn't suggest either medication because I know very little and only a vet should prescribe meds. Unfortunately these people have clearly never taken their bird to the vet so as a extra push I added that cockatiels can sometimes have sicknesses that are transferred to people which is true for all parrots. I tried to give her as much info avian on vets as I could and gave her the names of two very good vets in the area.

Yay, thank you :) I hope I end up becoming the bird expert there. So far we have a few fish experts, and one of the employees breeds ball pythons morphs and gets the final say in the reptile care. It's awesome they let us actually do our job and not have crazy managers who want everything done exactly as the company says.

its good that the employees (you especially) really care. you will be great, and i bet you saved that cockateil :)

Congrats on the new job, I hope you get the bird expert possition. I am going to work at a petstore when I am able to get a job(too young), but you have to be 18 to work at petsmart.

Congrats. I work for PetSmart too (well, not for much longer- I'm finding a job closer to home) ;)

It's a nice company to work for.

I wouldnt call it a nice company, they shove 6 parakeets into a cage that isnt even meant for 1. They feed them seeds, their water is always disgusting, and most of all they hire people who know nothing about animals and call them "experts" and they give out horrible advice that could kill peoples animals.

When I said expert it's said very loosely, it's the person we find if we don't know about a question someone is asking and want to make sure they get the right information.

And it's nice working for them if you have great coworkers, but the animals they send in are sometimes sad. We recently had two tortoises that were lethargic, my manager had them sent back, it's sad but we can't let them get away with sending sick animals. We are also always treating either a rat or a guinea big for a upper respiratory infection who arrived that way.

Congrats on the new job.
I am a FIRM believer that no matter what pet you have, it needs to see a vet A.S.A.P. ! I am so glad you let them know that. Hope that their bird is okay.

We do need more people like you working there.

As a former petco employee.....ugh I was the only person in that store who knew anything about animals. The manager was a new hire and had ZERO experience with any animals. I had to setup their entire saltwater system since they hadn't had a fish spe******t in over a year, and the other spe******ts were hardly spe******ts. I didn't last long since most of my employees were only good at stocking shelves and ringing, I was taken advantage of badly. I am glad these chain stores have knowledgeable people like you working there.

Although on a side note....I don't think I have raged as much as when punk kids would come in and plunk my feeder goldfish in my salt tanks. I swear I would leave the fish section for 15min and help someone with a guinea pig or hammy and BAM......goldies in my salt tanks. That upset me more than people trying to put clown fish in goldfish bowls with tap water. I thought Finding Nemo would be the death of me.

It looks like it's because it spells out a particular medication that is frequently spammed.
