Well i'm kind of worry because today I notice that there were some maggots in the walnut plastic box that i buy from HBE. I usually give my bird some walnuts.(BRAND NEW FROM HEB) But I don't know why, i had a bad feeling about it, so i told my mom if she was going to give the bird some walnuts to clean them up first. I had this feelings. So when i notice that there were some maggots on the box i threw away everything related to walnuts. I haven't research the ph acid on a bird. So I thought ask people that might know if this is bad for my sun conure. If it is please let me know so i can take him to a avian vet. I didn't notice a lot of maggots just 3/4 just trying to escape from the plastic box.

WELL PLEASE LET ME KNOW CAUSE I AM A BIT WORRY !!

I already gave him some apple juice so it can create some digestion and raise the acid a little bit. I was thinking about orange juice but it's 12pm so it's a little too late for that.. I'm gonna be here waiting a few hours for any reponses.

ANY INFORMATION IT"S APPRECIATED...

Sorry,I have no idea how to answer about the maggots. I would be inclined to throw away all the leftover, or call the company and tell themwant your money back or a replacement wth a ' clean ' pack. I'm just assuming here -- that if they were just normal maggots, that your birdie is likely to be unaffected. But, i'm nt a medical person. Call a vet. Call the mfr.

Good Lck

If he shows any signs of illness, take him to an avian vet. The maggots themselves are probably just extra protein, but it bespeaks poor storage conditions and I would worry a bit about fungal or bacterial contamination.

This kind of sucks, but yea I know he didn't eat no maggots. But eventhough i'm kind of worry. I know the walnuts he might have ate, they might of been clean. I'll just wait for a resonable answer. If not i'll call a avian vet..

thanks

There isnt much to do except wait and see or go to a vet. OTC meds are iffy since you have no idea what, if any, infectious agent is present. If you still have some of the nuts, hang onb to them. Otherwise hope the maggots were the worst of it.

I honestly until you get him to the vet wold withhold food and just provide lots of water in order to wash his system out.

Just a note. We had what we thought was a similar issue. It ended up being pantry moth larvae. Yuck city. We got them in in a bad bag of seed mix and it went from there....quickly. We ended up having to throw everything away in the pantry and started over. Look around your storage area for small..very small..white moths. Our conure never got sick at all but the moths quickly took hold of our pantry. Btw...we initially thought it was maggots as well.

Those little moths are a pain, but won't hurt your bird. The moths I have around here are brown. Because of all the animal feed I have I set out the moth traps. They have a pheromone lure to attract the males to a sticky trap, works great. The moths will get into any grains, pasta, dry foods like cat and dog food, seeds, nuts. I would recommend keeping foods sealed in either containers with tight fitting lids or plastic zip type bags to keep them out. The only way there would have been maggots in the walnuts is if they were rotting. You should have been able to smell it if they had gotten to that point, they would have been gross.

I would not withhold food. Why? If he didn't feel well, he would not eat, however, during day time when parrots are so active, witholding it can be dangerous to their health.

To prevent those pesky moths/larvae, I freeze all seeds for a couple of days before using them.
Once thawed and dry, I keep them in an airtight container.

Fishermen feed wild birds maggots whilst fishing, they say the birds love maggots.
I would personally not be too worried, as you noticed then immediately, and threw it way.
Just keep an eye on your bird, anything unusual behavior, then visit the vet.

Agreed with Echo. Antoinette makes a good point about maggots and wild birds. I am sure their wild counterparts are exposed to maggots. In our household these are the least of your worries. There are other more common substances that can be lethal to your parrot in your home.
