I have a Gucci his name is Ari, he will be 1 next month. I have never taken him to get a wing or nail clipping over the last 5 months that I have had him. I know you are supposed to do it every 6 months, but I heard that if you don’t clip their wings they will die. Is this true? Please help

No it's NOT true. Un-clipped they are more at loss risk if they get outside. There are pro's and con's about clipping wing feathers. Go to Youtube.com and type wingsNpaws into the search function and hit enter. It's not me, its about an African Grey by a fellow that explains really well. Then search topics or people about parrot things. Here in type-a-chat, we can answer a lot of questions besides. jh

As for regularity of grooming, there are no set times. If your bird's nails are long, then consider what perches you're using or you can file them down.

Regarding clipping, I'd recommend you read: https://parrotvolancy.com/should-i-clip-my-birds-wings/

I think Sailboat (not sure if him or another member) summed it up succinctly:
- precautions need to be taken for all situations if clipped or unclipped.
- you still need to take care of your bird's health; a flighted bird can exercise properly, but a clipped bird needs your help for wing flapping exercises.

Everybody has their own reasons for clipping or leaving flighted. A bird will not die because he has not been clipped (if that were the case, I dunno what's up with wild birds). That being said a clipped bird does not mean they cannot fly off or they won't get hurt (if fact, a grounded bird is more likely to get attacked, especially when lost but even at home, by ground creatures, such as cats, because they cannot fly away). In my area, clipped birds get lost and wind up being attacked by stray cats.

Take all safety precautions regardless of wings. Just because your bird is one or the other doesn't mean he is safe.

As above - it's not true and also it's not true that bird with clipped wings is safer. If the bird:
- falls into the toilet - the reason aren't unclipped wings but not closed toilet
- falls into a pot - unclipped wings also aren't the reason but that we let them flying in the kitchen during cooking
- escapes outside - again the reason aren't unclipped wings but unsecured windows
Many people clipps wings because they take them outside. They still can escape! If you want to go oustside much better solution is harness than wing clipping. Then the bird won't escape

It is important developmentally for him at least to fly successfully a few times before you clip. If you do clip, never do a single-wing--- your bird should have an even-cut (that allows him/her to GLIDE down to the floor---not sink like a stone).
Also-- NEVER take a clipped bird outside without a harness or cage, because they can still fly given the proper motivation, space, height, wind etc...If suddenly startled, they have been know to fly off of those they love most and get permanently lost (even if clipped).

This is a long-debated question. There are tons of great arguments to clip and tons of great arguments to NOT clip. One thing all can agree on, it's a personal choice up to the Parront to decide what will be best for your fid. No, he won't instantly die if you clip or if you do not. :)

Check out these threads with lots of info and arguments about this topic:

Personally, I chose to let my boys free-fly. I believe it's better for their health and happiness to be able to fly and we have the space in the house for them to do so safely. :)

Welcome to you and Ari. Wonderful posts above, the decision whether to clip is deeply individual and ought be the product of research and personal assessment.

Funny! Gucci is my standing joke every time I see a GCC labeled as ‘fancy’ or ‘exotic’ at a pet store!

FYI, our first, Tango, was killed because she was clipped!

When I rescued Syd at 14 weeks he had been clipped. He could still fly a little but I couldn't wait for his moult. While we were waiting we toured the area many times showing him the windows etc and potential flight routes. Even now - he is almost 3 - I remind him of obstacles etc. and any new additions which might impact on his favoured routes.
