Riley-white faced grey cockatiel (hatch date 6-28-2014) RIP Halloween-pied cockatiel
Thinking about the last 9 days with Speckles I can see the signs he was sick but at the time I just thought he was still adjusting I made sure when purchasing him to be sure his eyes were bright and clear and his nostrils were clear as well I did find it odd he was hiding in the back corner but I just figured he was scared as the lady at petsmart told me she had just put him out on the floor that day and she let me know that he came with an unconditional 14day guarantee so because I had to have him I bought him he didn't make a sound until Saturday but Halloween was quite as well so I figured he was just quieter than she was I noticed he didn't move around to much but I thought he was just scared and would explore his cage more once he adjusted he would explore his cage more. I kept him up late last night and he had his first night fright as far as I could tell since he was kept out in the living room with Rocky's crate. Rocky never showed an interest in Speckles what so ever which is werid since he's half malamute and has a high prey drive. The only time Rocky would go near Speckles cage was when I was talking to Speckles and then he'd just want me to pet him. Yes I now think these all point to him being sick and I just thought he was adjusting. I will be taking him back tomorrow and either get another bird or a refund depending on if I feel that pull like I didwith him and Halloween.:(

I'm sorry to hear about this? What sort of bird was he? It's so hard to tell what's abnormal behavior with a new bird, especially if they seem outwardly healthy. You might want to consider just getting a refund and going somewhere else, because what he had they could all have if it was contagious.

Such a shame.. I would concur, chain stores like PetSmart are hit/miss for most animals. Get a refund and go elsewhere. Birds typically aren't "defective" once properly weened, something caused it and it may well be diseased from the mill it came from or in the store itself. As with dogs, you have no idea where the animal came from and if it's inbred or exposed to pathogens that could cause such problems.
Support a real bird shop, local breeder or rescue if you can.

The nice part is, he had you and he was loved at the end.

Aww. I'm sorry. Poor baby. So sad. I feel terrible for you, and that little baby.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I agree with what several of the other members here have said. You should get a refund and walk. In addition, you should thoroughly disinfect that cage and everything in it. And change out anything that can't be properly disinfected. As Kalidasa pointed out, whatever your bird had could conceivably be contagious.

Wishing you the best for the next fid you welcome into your home!

I did get a refund I couldn't take him to the vet to see why he died I had to return the body to petsmart to get the refund. Which I got and throw away ALL toys and food dishes I even got rid of the cage. I will get everything new for the next bird I get, which I decided to wait until September or so as in august there will be some home improvement projects going on in early august. Petsmart also went to work disinfecting the cage he was in as they still didn't have the next one in yet
