SO Geri is down stairs, I am in the john, when Salty, in quiet conversational level, starts talking to himself, and I realize he talks way way more than I thought he did. Little bumb, he says a lot of stuff I never heard him say in front of me. And of course, now we are both sitting in the living room, and he is quiet as a grave. He must be part African Grey.. Ah Salty, Salty, me boy, ye betray me, ye do!

That is so coolio! Just one more reason parrots are so... non-mammalian.

Why do you think some birds do that?

The Rb does not. What you hear is what you get. I spy on him enough to know he doesn't talk or sing much when alone. Just screams and rings that bell you gave him.

Bumble used to do that. It was really cute because she had this sense about when I was napping and she'd start singing and talking and making all kinds of sounds. I haven't caught her at it in a VERY long time, but that doesn't mean she isn't still doing it; just that maybe she's more savvy now. I heard her kissy noises and peekaboo that way long before she busted them out "in public."

Was he saying “the treasure be in the master suite, argh, in the dresser drawer, shiver me timbers”? Do you think he has a cell phone up in there and is calling Nigel on the down-low?

I read that lots of birds practice talking in private before trying with the humans. What kind of things does he say? Can you get a tape?
