I have a bipolar parrot!

I think Cracker must be bipolar. Yesterday he was wearing me out. He was constantly biting me and generally doing everything he could do to make himself very unwanted parrot. Today, however, he was just being as sweet as can be. He did not try to bite me once. I think he was licking me, and was making the most pleasant sort of clicking sounds that were very comforting. The only thing I can compare those clicking sounds to is a cat purring although the two sounds do not sound anything alike. I think I might have had Cracker about two weeks and I think he is trying to drive me crazy. I do not understand him at all.

The clicking is common - a cat purring is a good comparison - it is a sign of contentment.

Often the clicking is bundled together with a similar sound/act and called beak-grinding. While they mean about the same thing they are certainly distinct sounds.

Seems to me beak grinding is more of a quite contentment while the clicking is a bit more upbeat or playful contentment.

I love the heading of this message about Bi Polar parrots. I think they all have good days and bad days just like we do.

What kind of parrot do you have? Maybe I could share a link with you about his species' behaviour.

In response to Parrot Queen I have a mutation, not a hybrid, of a Greencheek Conure. He is a very pretty looking bird. I would like to thank Antionette for that link to the article on parrot behaviour. It was very informative. One thing I learned is that Cracker has marked me as his territory. He frequently rubs his beak against me. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Although I would not wish anyone's parrot to behave the way Cracker does at times, I am glad I am not the only one experiencing these problems. I would also like to thank Auggie's Dad for his very infomative post on the behavior of Cracker. On a final note, today Cracker has been in his good parrot mode. He was not doing that clicking noise or licking me but he was chirping softly and only gave me a few light pecks. I hope he continues to be a good little parrot, but I am not going to hold me breath.

Lol, "good parrot mode"

I'm glad that the community could help you so much, and I'm also happy that Cracker is doing better too.

Yeah, parrots can be very territorial. I learned that lesson the hard way with Pineapple...

i call my meyers parrot bipolar too... some days she wants to be loved some days she doesn't even want to come out the cage but I always try cuz I don't like keeping her in the cage

I wish my conure was only bipolar. He's downright psychotic at times :) especially this time of year.

Thank you for your post.... thought I was the only one with bipolar birds! Lol!! My sennie can't decide whether she likes me or my hubby more, so she either loves me or hates me, depending on which day of the week it is! :-D
My GCC bites and performs like an absolute freak when he is tired and wants to nap... so he goes from trying to eat my fingers to lying on his back on my chest, cuddled up and fast asleep!
