I found affrican grey

Few years ago, i found an affican grey parrot at my balcony. I wrote an advertisment, but noone came for her. So it stayed and it is still with us. I don’t know how old it is and if it is a boy or a girl. I would like to tame it, but i don’t now how. Mayby you could advise something. I can stroke it but, sometimes, it bites me while i do it.

By biting when you are touching this bird he or she is sending you a message and the message is "don't touch me". Please honor that. Have you taken the bird to an avian vet for a wellness check up? Its the right thing to do. Is there a band on the leg? Did you name the bird yet? How much bird experience do you have because we need more information in order to help you. Do you have other pets? In order to tame a bird you will need this bird to trust you first. What have you been feeding the bird? A vet can check for a micro chip which can help to trace the owner. The information on a leg band can trace the breeder who may also know who the owner is.

Is it really biting you or trying to nibbling your fingers? There's a difference in biting down hard and a bunch of little "bites". Since you don't know the background, you don't know if your grey was pressure trained or not. My Jasper is always beaking or nibbling my fingers. It's a sign of affection. When you pet her, does she ask for it by lowering her head?

First things first, if you haven't brought your grey in for a vet checkup, it is always recommended to ensure they are healthy. They could also do a DNA test to get you a for sure as to what gender he/she is

There are so many ways you can go about training your grey. There's a ton of great threads here, as well as countless videos on youtube about how to go about doing so.

The first things you'll want to do is of course gain your greys trust, which you already seemed to have done. Hooray! Continue to build trust by offering tasty treats, giving him/her a varied diet, and interacting with them often. The next thing you'll want to do is work with your grey to 'step up', one of the most basic commands that all parrots should know. Here's a couple great instructional videos.... here!

Next you'll want to work on bite-pressure training. This is basically training your bird to not bite you so HARD! This also helps tremendously with reducing biting. Here's some videos...here!

If you havent read Cags 101 yet I recommend you do so its a sticky at the top of the African grey forum. Lots of good information on this site. My Timneh decides when I can pet her and when I can't. Usually during the day hands off and at night she loves to cuddle. Thanks for taking this fella in and trying to find the original owners.

First of all, I'm from Poland and I found my parrot at my balcony in Warsaw. I'm going to the vet this Monday. I had had small parrots before (cockiatel), and I have read as many information as I could find on Polish websites, and I have a small bok about affrican grey. About stroke, he/she bite me gently and I know this is sginal that he/she feels good, when he/she is in mood she/he flaps her had for stroking. But sometimes he/she is aggresive, and attacks me. I tried to learn him/her to "step up" but I think he/she affraids of my hand and bites. Mayby previous owner treats her badly, beacuse her first word I've heard was "f..k off" in Polish.

Your English is just fine, a hell of a lot better than my Polish I guarantee that. Just take it slow with these guys your train them differently than other birds. Greys set the boundaries and you try to expand them. If you try to push to fast or hard you will be rewarded with a bite. Try reading to your grey when your sitting outside the cage or just talk to him. Have you thought about a name yet? They are reallly smart so the sky is the limit in training if your willing to spend the time.

Greys are amazing. Patience and persistence, and lots of treats. Talk to them all the time, greet them, tell the, what you're doing, they absorb a lot! They recover and are loyal!

What kind of treats can I give her? Also I want to ask about one more thing. I live with my fianceé and sometimes the parrot goes down to the floor, rushes and attacks her feet. What may be a cause of that?

All of my greys have loved feet...we just keep our feet off the ground when our grey is on the floor.

Treats are things that are your parrots favorite food or treat. My grey (Nigel) loves popcorn and will do anything for some. Try a few things and see what he likes. Remember parrots can't have chocolate, onions, or avocados. Celery isn't the best either as it has so much fiber that can create problems. Try a sunflower seed, a tiny piece of cheese (cheese only occasionally), boiled eggs, etc.

Welcome to the forums, thanks for joining! You probably saved your Grey's life by taking her/him in!! As others posted, Greys are very unique parrots and are rather shy, but they watch carefully and learn quickly.

Going after your fiancé's feet is a common bird trick, it often is a show of dominance.

Hi. We have gone to the vet with our parrot. Vet told us, that it's propably a girl. She's in good condition. She doesn't have a chip. I try to spend more time with her and she's stopped attacking my fianceé. I have started training and she has got a clicker method. Today i tried target training.
