Oh my gosh, I was so shocked and sad after my neighbor left my house this morning. Not to judge him, I like my neighbor, but I sure don't understand why some are bird owners or why they want birds. He originally came over because he's going to cut our grass but then I asked how his birds were.....
He has a beautiful lovebird and a Ringneck Parakeet. He replied that they're doing fine but that he's thinking of letting the Lovebird loose and that he hopes he sticks "around the house" (outside). The lovebird is fully flighted. He said he feels bad that he's cooped up. I was over about a week ago to clip one of the bird's wings. The birds are in the screened in porch. When I visited I saw that both birds are in a pretty large parrot cage. He has already lost a couple parakeets due to raccoons raiding the porch. I saw parakeet feathers on the ground and asked about it. His other bird, the Ringneck parakeet hardly has any feathers due to plucking. Only his head and neck has feathers.
Well, after hearing the plans, I tried to nicely plead with him not to let the lovebird loose and if that if he doesn't want him to please let me have him. He then replied, well, you'll just put him in a cage and he'll still be cooped up. I then said, my birds are always out and he'll be well loved and will get to fly around the room. He then said he would think about it and 'if' he gives him away, he'll go to me. We are in Florida and being a caged pet bird I explained he won't know how to find food, and most likely will fly far away if he's scared. And I know for sure that there are a pair of hawks that stay in this area. I told him he may not survive in the wild and may not stick around your house. I don't know much about lovebirds but I have been a loving bird owner for over 30 years and I know parrot and small bird behavior really well. I do hope my neighbor won't let him loose. I am hoping this little lovebird will be okay. He is beautiful. If I do get to adopt him from my neighbor, I will let you all know he's safe. The lovebird's name is Sonny.
