Parrots
We are looking for a bird for our family. It's very much like we are pregnant and waiting for the day the new addition comes to the family!
There was just a macaw posted on one of the sites I have been checking everyday. He is well mannered, well feathered, and honestly sounds dreamy!
But I've never had a large parrot. And while I read a lot about macaws, and dream of one day being owned by one, would it be totally dumb of us to buy a huge cage and change our direction from amazon to macaw?
How scary are they?
How do you not allow them to dominate you?

This is the ad:
Vince-an excellent Gold and Blue Macaw - Extra Large - Male - Bird North Nanaimo, Nanaimo

Would it be outrageous of us to do that?

We would have to buy a bigger cage.... And maybe larger pellets.

I'm going to go read something, anything I can find until someone answers.....
Maybe I will write to the seller as well. Eekk.

There is a saying if it sounds too good to be true it is. I think this applies here. I think this is a scam. That is my opinion, I will wait for others to jump in here.

If you never owned a large macaw before, then I wouldn't do it, especially if you haven't been able to see the bird in person, handle her, etc. . .

You're taking a big risk and taking care of any macaw, especially a large one, is a huge commitment.

I decided to write the seller and ask a bunch of questions. I figure he only real way to know is to meet the bird. I am totally open to rescues. Maybe this boy isn't to bad, and I'm just worrying for nothing.
You can never know until you go I guess, and passing an opportunity of lifetime for fear is silly...

The picture used, is a generic picture used to describe lots of macaws.
The other two seemed to be 'original' but that one has plenty of other sites using it...

Scam, stay well away.

A macaw is a commitment for life.. as any bird should be. A rescue is a solemn oath to never abandon birdy. Macaws are definitely a "different breed" of bird in my opinion. They're very high maintenance, but the love you get in return (especially from a rescue) at the moment they realize you're their saviour? It can't be described.

I just recently rescued Duke yesterday. Today (about 5 min. ago), he "hugged me" with his wings. Words can't describe it.

If you're going to get a bird, I'm all for rescuing. If you're going to get a macaw, think long and hard about it. Don't just let him tug on your heartstrings if you can't make the life commitment. He will most likely outlive you. Your vacations will never be able to last longer than a week unless you bring him. Ever try to travel with a macaw? I'm still trying to figure that one out.

I'm not trying to put a damper on things.. I just want you to realize this shouldn't be a decision that is made very lightly. Once you commit, there really is no turning back.. and yes, macaw bites hurt.. ALOT.
