Two parakeets. Kindle and Charlie
I have two parakeets. Kindle and Charlie. Kindle steps up whenever I ask him to. Charlie only steps up when kindle is up, if at all. Kindle is not as scared of me as charlie is(but he is still pretty scared). Kindle will step up in or out of the cage but charlie will only step up outside with kindle. Every day before I go to school I take Kindle out and Charlie follows him but still wont step up. Before I leave I put food on my desk and on the floor and I put treats on my bed. I do this so they will like being out of the cage. But even though I do this Kindle and Charlie fly back to there cage. Since charlie wont step up I am not concerned with that for him but with Kindle he flies back to his cage even if Charlie isn't there. I would greatly greatly apreaciate it if some one would reply with some tips, advice, and help.:D:greenyellow::yellow2:

a good start would be to allow the bird to stay in the cage if thats where he/she obviously wants to be. Leave the door open and allow it to come out on its own terms. When the bird does come out then give it a lot of praise and treats.

If you keep bringing the bird out and it instantly keeps flying back to the cage... then a pattern will form and it will become second nature for the bird to fly back as soon as it is removed.

If you allow it to make the choice and give treats and praise when it does what you want, then it will learn that coming out is a gpod thing and will enjoy coming out.

What I did and still do for my Fids to step up was Put my index finger sideways so that the outer part of my finger is rubbing against their bellies, and then slwoly or immediatly move your finger towards the beak. Then, it will nibble down gently, and when it does move your hand up and both my birds stepped up. Once they are on your finger or hand or arm, you can practice trust with them and stepping up by making stair step ups. Where they continuasly keep grabbing finger to the other finger.

Or you can practice by putting him on floor and have his cage high up and put your hand, stick/branch, pencil, and long cylinder shaped object that is think enough for the parrakeets tiny feet to grasp on. This can build trust, and if does not rely on his wings to get to his cage he can always rely on a step up. This worked both finely for my Conure and Parakeet. Although I have trouble with the Conure when he's inside the cage or when he is very comfortable in his Sofa Hut. Hope this helps, If I was not clear on one of my suggestions please do not hesitate to ask for clearification.
