I am so excited and just had to share...first for a tad bit of background,
Charlie (and his sister Sweet Pea) are two tiels I rescued approximately 2 1/2 years ago. They came from a heartbreaking abusive and neglectful home.
I have other birds that I get to handle, so it's been easy for me to step back and just let love, kindness and time do it's work.
Charlie and Sweet Pea have settled down so much, when they are out they have learned to step up on a stick/perch to be put back in their cage, they no longer scream and run to the back of their cage when I walk by or come near it, I can reach in and clean/remove dishes and they rarely move away from my hands, unless I try to offer my finger for them to step up on...then they move away...but not in a frantic panic...they just calmly step aside. Charlie is developing a decent vocabulary and is very happy to show off what he knows.
Oh, and the cutest is when Charlie and Sweet Pea decide to climb down off their cages and play stands and take a walk through the house together.
Today, our other tiel, Chiquita was indicating to me that she wanted a bath, she spreads her wings and leans forward when I show her the spritzer bottle...so I was spritzing her down and Charlie...FIRST TIME EVER...since he's been with me...didn't fly off to "safe ground" when I thought I'd offer him a spritz...instead, he walked closer to me and spread his wings, tucked his head under one and rolled forward...I spritzed, he looked up...took a couple more steps toward me and ducked his head under his outstretched wing and leaned forward as I spritzed him.
I sooo wish someone was home to grab the camera, he was soo flipping adorable!
I've "forced" him to have baths before, not often, but usually to help with molting...this is the first time he actually asked for it and seemed to enjoy it.
Here's a couple pictures, the one of him resting is taken today after his "Bath" and the other is him and his sister...she is the one preening.
Even though they won't let me handle them yet, we've bonded in other ways and I can't help but love them both sooooo much!
