How to prevent this disease!?

Hello,
sadly today my conure died from chlamydia pisttaci although treating him with the medicine and antibiotic but he couldn't handle the sickness :'( ...I felt sad so my dad decided to get me an African grey tomorrow! ...so I cleaned the room and the bird's cage really well and I did sanitize the cage and I'll be exposing it to the sun ..u know to kill the germs and bacteria! And I've also opened the windows in the room which the sick bird was in to refresh the air!!... So is there anything else I can to do!? Cuz I don't want my new bird to catch the disease! ..and can this disease effect me?? because Ive been feeling weird lately idk if it was from the bird or my sick cousin whom I visited befor yesterday :/ .. Oh and if I have caught the chlamydia will it effect the new bird!?

Hello I'm sorry about your bird. I think that you should hold off on getting another bird until you have discussed it w/your vet.

I also think you need to see a doctor since this is a disease that CAN be transmitted to humans. Very dangerous as it can effect long term damage your lungs & heart.

So sorry for your loss. I agree, I wouldn't get another bird until you're absolutely certain there's no chance of a new bird getting sick.

I am so sorry for your loss, I know that is heart breaking.

Please do not let your emotions control your thinking.
Do you know how your Conure was infected? How old was the Conure?
Have you been at pet stores and handled other birds?

Just one cleaning may not be enough. the Disease is air borne it can attach to the carpet, drapes, furniture and can lay doormat for several days.
If you have carpet, have it professionally cleaned and tell them of the virus that the bird had so they can properly use disinfection. The cage needs to be Power washed and then cleaned with bleach.. several times.. I would let is sit outside in the sun for several days. Bring it in during the night and dew can form and bacteria in the air will attach to the damp areas.

Please wait a while to make sure the area you keep the bird in is absolutely clean.
I would even then put the new bird in a different room for at least 30 days.

I'm very sorry for your loss, but how do you expect to put an AG in a conure cage? And why so soon are you getting a new little buddy? You should wait a month or two, don't jump into this, I almost did after my little green cheek died. You need a little time to just absorb that he/she is not with you anymore. Let the tears wear off. Thanks for coming here for advice, and I wish you the best with your new AG, they have such great personalities, also, are you getting a Timneh, or a Congo?

I just saw your other post about the Patagonian, he was only with you for 2 weeks! Poor little guy, just make sure you AG comes from a person that you know is reputable!

Thanks guys!! I just came back from my doctor he said nothing serious just a cold I caught from my cousin! as for the vet he Said he will give me a call as soon as he is not busy! :/ ...but you know what frustrates me that I got the conure two weeks ago from his previous owner and he told me he is healthy and everything and I got his number just incase but guess what he gave me a wrong number! Well I guess he knew he was ill ...I just hate it when people lie!! ... As for the cage it's big enough to fit an AG!! But I will not use it! I will buy a new one just to be safe and as for the room there wasn't a carpet nor much stuff.. it was simply an empty extra room!! But I will put the AG in a new room! And I'll be getting the AG from my friend so yes it will be from a person that I trust!*

This right here is one of the major reasons I dont buy birds or re home them off of craigslist . Alot of people put sick animals on craigslist to get rid of them and wallah in return maybe killing other peoples pets . It makes me sick that people do that and Im sorry for your loss and I hope your AG does well and is with you for many years .

Oh and to answer wibitywab question! ..it will be a Congo African grey between 6-8 months old I suppose!

Psittacosis is (at least in the U.S.) a reportable disease to the cdc both doctors and vets are required to report it. It is HIGHLY contageous... first symptoms in humans usually being fatigue. I would NOT get a bird for at least 2 months, and clean ALL bird related items with a specialized dissenfectant like Nolvasan. The treatment is Doxycycline, so if your vet truely believed that your bird had chlamydiosis, that is the antiobiotic he would have prescribed. Most vets and doctors don't know they are required to report it, so it tends to keep spreading around. Here we do annual blood tests on our birds, and that is one we always send intoo... just so I know that everyone is still safe and healthy. The other thing is that psittacosis can live for a while on surfeces... so please be dilligant in your cleaning.

I would advise when getting a new bird from anyone to take it into the vet immediately... most good breeders will give you 24 hours or more to take a bird to the vet.

I will tell you that a lot of vets will say one disease or another, but they are sometimes wrong.... This is why it's important to know your meds. I am very sorry for your loss though
