How to make my too love me

Hey y’all I was wondering if there where any ways to make my bare eyed cockatoo bond to me strongly, iv had him a few days now and he does like to be on my shoulder but when he sees a new person he shows a lot of love and climbs on them more frequently than me it’s like he’s bored of me after a few days. I dont know if he just needs to settle more but anyways, does anyone know any ways to gain love and affection and trust from my bare eye too thanks for any replies also if it helps he has trouble with things that shake he gets scared easily

He only bites when I try to get him to step up, he preens my hair and try’s to give me kisses but I try to keep my face away from him, his previous owners where very nice good owners but they couldn’t keep him cuz they where moving, right now he is on a diet of seeds pellets nuts fruits and veggies

In addition to Scott's link for bonding, just remember that your new Too is 1 year old so still developing/maturing. You will witness maturational changes: hormone, behavior, emotional, and physical changes. A few days is not enough time at all. You need to build trust and refrain from anything sexual that will misconstrue your relationship. Make sure you take it slow and do not allow people to snuggle/cuddle your "too" (you should not either). This is very sexual for them and it can lead to dangerous health and behavior problems--- pet only on the head and neck (this applies to everyone---doesn't matter if your bird likes cuddles, they are like poison long-term). You should also avoid providing access to dark spaces (under clothing, furniture, blankets/pillows, low-ledges, tents, huts, boxes etc). A hormonal "too" is nothing to mess around with--they can become super aggressive and loud if they become sexually frustrated or over-bond with a particular person. I know your bird is young for hormones, but this goes back to not starting any routines that cannot be sustained--these cuddles etc will eventually be completely inappropriate and if you set them up as an expectation, your bird will not understand why you have stopped if you wait to do so until your bird is sexually mature.

Try doing quiet things near the cage, if you can associate yourself with treats and positive experience, read to your bird, TEACH INDEPENDENCE (praise for independent play), do not start any routine that cannot be sustained long-term, expose to new objects gradually (name then and let them sit near the cage before forcing your bird to interact with them closely etc)...Talk about what you are doing as you do it (e.g., I am going to take out the trash, I am going to sweep etc).

Wonderful advice above! You have a young bird with many changes in process and on the horizon. In my experience, cockatoos are less likely to become "one person birds" provided they are well socialized. For now, work on building trust, bonding, and you can be the primary giver of treats as reward. Ultimately, birds choose their favorites.

Oh sorry for the double post it showed that it didint post for some reason lol,so far he likes this one toy with gears and a bell he likes to dance watch animal documentaries and listen to people whistle , he is extremely quiet except when I leave the room he lets out one little scream he doesn’t whistle and has only talked once so far he said HEY HEY HEY��

I bet Cooper is very clever. He will need more toys and each with a different purpose: destructibility (shredder toys), foraging, jungle toys, noise makers, puzzles and exercise etc. Not all parrot toys are appropriate for your Too, for example your Too needs a harder wood to destroy (chew) than my Eclectus' who need a softer wood. Also, have a look at our toy section for unsafe toys such as snuggle huts and the less expensive bells on toys. I had to discard most of Ellie's toys when I joined this site and read about how unsafe some of her toys were. The pretty Eclectus pic on the front of some things fooled me back then....

The Eclectus' own me...I just cook and clean for them...oh, and make the money to buy them all of their food and toys LOL. Mine are very clever, very precious, very vocal, a barrel of laughs, eat like absolute piglets, cause me to pull out my hair at times, prevent me from having any personal time except about 2-5am after a cat-nap (just joking), an absolute joy and treasure, and the most beautiful parrots in the world .



In all seriousness, many people on this forum have stated that they are glad they don't have an Eclectus because they are different from all other parrots in a few ways. The main one is their diet so I'm not joking about the 'cooking', preparing fresh veggies and appropriate plant protein etc. Those of us who are owned by an Eclectus wouldn't be without them . They are worth every second of our time and every cent we spend on them. Love them all to pieces .

Totally agree re eclectus. Beautiful birds imo. Had him nearly a year now and after the initial bedding in. (3 days of constant eccy screams!!) now only time he is vocal is when I get home from work!! Dogs bark, key in door and I get a eccy hello!!!

That’s super cool I met an eclectus named cowboy that knew every word you could think of and a lot of sounds to and he played dead and did tricks he was amazing
