Congo African Grey: Jenga
Jenga got brought home last Saturday! We've had a great time so far - she loves her playgym, loves pomegranates and mushrooms and seems to be pretty happy. I had been visiting her at the rescue center for about 2 weeks every other day before I brought her home so she (usually) steps up for me when I ask. At the rescue center, and apparently in the car on the way to my house, she was a chatterbox. Everyone talked about how she wouldn't shut up (she was there for a week). Now that she's at my house, she has barley said two peeps. I had some friends over one night and she sat on her gym and played while we played games. We got a little loud and every now and then she would give a "beep beep beep!" or "pretty bird"

I suspect that she is just shy and adjusting, but yet it seems that the rescue would be more stressful for her than being an only child in my apartment? I leave the radio on for her while I'm at work so she doesn't feel alone.

My previous CAG was a closet talker and would talk when you weren't around but I have a bird cam on her and she still doesn't say anything even when I'm gone O.o

Again, I suspect she is just adjusting and possibly nervous about some things in the room or something, but any tips on pinpointing what it is that's making her nervous?

How long was she at the rescue? Maybe she was there long enough to be comfortable enough to talk. If you just picked her up on Saturday, I think it is her just getting used to her surroundings. Give her some more time. I think she is just needing time to come out of her shell.

She actually got dropped off while I was there visiting, it was creepy perfect timing, so about two weeks. Right now I'm happy as a clam just watching her play with her toys and hang upside down ^_^ she's delightful and says plenty without saying a word - I just want to make her comfortable. Thanks for confirming with me!

Another thing I found with my grey is when he is being ignored and wants attention, he talks more. Once she bonds with you even more and gets used to her surroundings, I'm sure she will be a little chatterbox once again! I'm sure the busy atmosphere at a rescue encouraged her to talk more as well.

Do you have her cage in a nice corner where she feels safe? That is another thing to look at. The good news is, you know she can talk, now it's just a matter of when will she feel comfortable enough to let loose. Be careful what you wish for, she may never stop talking once she starts. ;) LOL!

The rescue is probably loud. So the bird gets loud.

Your home is quiet. So the bird gets quiet.

One starts, they all start... then they get themselves worked into a state.

I would suspect that is what's going on.

Yes, her cage is in a corner so she can't be ambushed by monsters ;)

LOL I know! Part of me says "Amberly, enjoy the peace while you can!" I'm so stoked to get to know her better!

My CAG is an "outside the cage" bird. He is my instigator.

He hides under his cage and pops his head out at people as they walk by and either grabs their toes or their heels. So, actually, He's the "little monster" that ambushes...

The adventures you will have! Aren't they great?! There is nothing better then love from a parrot! :D

Give her some time. All my parrot were quiet for several weeks or even month. I now sometimes regret that those day have long gone:-)

You may want to start shopping for ear plugs now, cause she will be letting loose directly.

Jenga got brought home last Saturday! We've had a great time so far - she loves her playgym, loves pomegranates and mushrooms and seems to be pretty happy.

Mushroom is a type of fungus and a food your bird should stay away from. It is known to cause intestinal problems....

She seems to be getting more comfortable! I got my first calling beep the other day!

Echo, I know someone mentioned it somewhere else - I about had a heart attack and called the Vet ready to rush her in, but the vet said it was OK. She didn't mention intestinal problems though O.o, but yes this is certainly noted and no more mushrooms in the house!
