Leo is becoming something of an almond addict. I know its the healthy nut and we have been giving it as a treat when he sits with us while we eat in the kitchen.
He knows where they are kept and would go looking for them if they are not offered.
And now wants almonds instead of breakfast.
Put a stop to it or is it OK?
TIA

Do you give him a full almond every time as a treat? With an grey, I'm sure you could get away with giving a half or a quarter for a treat rather than a full piece. Exactly how many does he get in a day?

Once you stop making a treat a novelty item, it starts to lose its effectiveness. I don't think 1-3 almonds a day is necessarily a bad thing for larger birds because they're a pretty healthy nut. But they also have a high fat content, and even though it's a healthy fat too much can still become a bad thing.

My guy gets 2-3 almonds a day, but rarely eats that much. He really enjoys getting the nut out of the shell, he could take or leave the actual nut.

I am having to switch out to almond halves, as my little princess expects nothing but her almond for going back into her cage. I tried to use a nutriberry and she looked at it, picked it up, threw it, then sat back on the food dish expectantly.

It really cracks me up how she demands a certain thing like that.

There have been days last week when he had up to 7/8 in a day because he was asking each member of the family separately. Now we tell each other if we've already given it.
I tried giving him little pieces but he wants the whole thing. I think part of it is the fun of crushing it. There is lots of cruahed powder after he is done. Don't know how much actually ends up in his stomach.

Will defenitly try and limit it and perhaps not offer as a treat so much.

I have to give my two cents here. I used to give mine 3 - 4 a day, and both were diagnosed with liver problems. Charlie bounced back, but Milo is on heptonic every single day to help his little liver. So, i might be too carefull, but I would say only one a day. Rather safe than sorry.
