How long does it take to wean a Indian Ringneck

I this ad, the seller says that the Ringneck is 8 weeks old and just weaned. I thought it took longer to wean a bird than that. But then again I have never handfed nor weaned a bird. I guess it could be different with each bird.

I wouldn't mind trying to hand feed a bird once just to see how it's done.

This is a great price for an Indian Ringneck. I'm soooo tempted since she is only like 25 miles from me. I've kind of always like Ringnecks. But if I'm going to walk down that street of fire by getting another bird passed my wife, I want to make sure it's either a Grey, Macaw or Amazon. If anyone is in the area and wants a bird at a steal of a price, it might be worth checking out. She said she bought it from a bird show and has been hand feeding it.

From what I have read, it seems like on average it is between 10-13 weeks, but then again, every bird is different. It may have weaned itself that earlier, or it may have been force weaned.

yes .. is different from each bird ~~ and sometimes depends on the enviroment too. If don't have experience on hand feeding, better find a fully wean bird. Maybe at least 5-6months old, it's much secure and stable.

I imagine it varies with bird species, but River was fully weaned when I picked him up at 8 weeks.

Some handfeeders can get green cheeks, tiels, and conures to wean at 8 weeks. Occasionally it happens here that I baby is essentially weaned at 8 weeks. However, I don't ever sell a bird under 12 weeks (including tiels). I have found that babies weaned at 8 weeks will often revert and cry for a feeding a couple days later. So, it's possible that the bird is weaned and do fine, but I'd be sure to have formula on hand just in case. That's the difference between "weaned" and "abundance weaned"

Not to mention a bird that is just weaned is not going to handle a new home as well as a baby that's been eating solid food for a few weeks.

I don't think so. The chicks do stay with the parents for some time after they fledge & are fed by the parent birds until they are independent & find food for themselves.

I would wean my chicks about 10 week mark but that would also depend on the size of the bird. Smaller babies wean quicker than larger parrots. For example an Eclectus would be weaned at about 16 weeks & a Red Tail Black Cockatoo can take 6 to 8 months to be independent.

I would also say that the ringneck in question is a little older than the seller thinks. I would say it's at least 12 weeks old. It looks to have well developed feathers.

I haven't had the pleasure of raising a large Macaw but i believe they take about 9 months. I only rear the Red Tails from hatch to wean. So i know it's a lot of hard work. The last RTB Too i H/R was 8 months old before he weaned. They seem to take longer when only 1 chick is reared on its own.
