I've been emailing the lady that found the tiel. One potential owner is about 10 miles away. She wants to know if that's too far. She really wants to make sure the true owners claim the bird.

I don't know. But I'd assume it could be that far. Especially if the wind was blowing right or the bird was in a panic.

It depends on the winds... If the winds are strong, and he goes with the wind, that significantly increases the distance they will travel.

If it's windy, they can go quite far...

They usually stay within the area where they got lost. Ten miles is still within the vicinity in my opinion.

We found Tusk six miles away.

There was a Vasa parrot that showed up in my back yard one day. (Those things are RARE! So I immediately knew it was an escaped pet.) Turns out the owner who had lost the bird lived about 35 miles away. The Vasa had hooked up with a flock of wild crows, and was running with them. Sadly, we didn't ever get her back. Came close a couple of times, but didn't get her back.

So ten miles is entirely possible.
