Should I rise it higher up the cage so half it sticks out the top of the cage?

Ideally you want the nest box hanging off the outside of the cage, with an entrance from the cage into the nest box opening. Then a perch inside the cage, just outside the nest box entrance.

Does your cage have a small hinged door on one of the sides near the top? This door can be removed and the nest box hung outside right there.

I think the box could be turned sideways instead of using it vertically. Or if you use it vertically you will need to have the entrance hole that the BIRDS use near the top of the nest box, then included a ladder down to the substrate you place in the bottom of the box so the birds can get in and out. Some people use wire mesh instead of a ladder.

What species will be using this box?

Hi sodakat! Thanks for your reply. Its for Amazon parots. One orange winged and the female red lored. I think what i will do is verticle at first I will drill lthe hole so that its near the top bbut also near the middle of the length.. I have a parrot ladder so i will use that. What substrate will i use? I have a latch towards to mid-top of the cage which i will open and attatche to the hole on the nestbox. when i do this, should i keep the parrots in the cage shut? Right now the top of the cage is open and they fly off and sit on my curtain railings. To encourage breeding will it help to keep them closed in the cage (with access only to the nest box)?

Please don't let those two birds breed. Its unethical to produce hybrids. Plus, the cage you have them is barely big enough for one bird, let alone two and their brood. If you must breed birds, get them a bigger cage and then get one or both of them same species mates.

Zoloft may I ask did you take anyone's advice on researching? If you did you should still be doing it as it should take you a good months of research to learn a half decent amount about breeding, and I mean probably an hour or so a night of straight reading may give yo a heads up on what to do right and wrong....

I prefer to hang a box AFTER I see birds mating successfully.

If you present a nest box to an experienced female and a male who shows no interest in mating you will probably end up with infertile eggs. Hens hate to see a nest box go to waste.

Most parrot forums are not conducive to talking about breeding and most members know nothing about breeding.

If you want information you need to contact a breeder, IMO instead of posting anything else here.

Ok I won't breed them..If anything I might consider getting male lored in future for the girl...don;t worry.

I have NO problems with breeders or breeding. Most of our breeders are 70 or older. We need new blood that wants to do it RIGHT. Not what this person is doing.

Soda i dont mean to tell him not to breed and id also like to add i do have expirence with breeding and quite a grasp so not everyone is blinded... He is just doing it wrong and not researching. I am ok with the fact he wants to id just like to see so more education before doing something and making a mistake... i mean he didnt even listen to henpecked and he breeds! amazons!... so its just a matter of needing to be semi educated before we or atleast i can offer constructive help on breeding. I will not offer help to breeding: when one it is not the same species, two no education about what whom is doing is present, and three when there has been multiple topics and still nothing has sunk in!

Unfortunately Zoloft you did NOT consider what we said in another post about breeding hybrids nor do you know anything about breeding period and you still proceed into doing it regardless of the outcome. I haven't post or read the forum much since last night cause I came home to a horror image. One of the pairs decided to toss out their baby out of the nest box and he ended up on the grate on the bottom of the cage with both of his feet chewed to shreds while still alive and he died in my hands last night while I was horrified contemplating if I should put him to sleep or not cause a bird without both feet would really have no life. If I keep him going I would have to baby him for the rest of his life. I know a animal can deal without limbs and they still keep going. So first thing I try to warm him up cause he was ice cold. But as I tried he gasp for his last air in my hands and I was heart broken....He lived briefly in my hands for 5 min while I try to warm him up but he finally give up. He was only 3 days old. This is the type of stuffs that CAN and WILL happen, since you know nothing about breeding, what will you do when this happens to you? I personally know what to do BUT I've been doing this for the past 16 years. But you didn't even think twice from the last posting until the new nest box before you proceed to know more. Regardless IF your breeding them together or not, a nest box is NOT good to show them at the moment.

I probably jumped the gun a bit before I posted this cause I was irked reading the beginning but I read your not going to breed them so I hope you keep that true to yourself!

Oh my gosh, Mikey, I am SO SO sorry!!! :(

I was speaking in general terms. Usually there are few breeders on parrot forums. Obviously there are people who occasionally breed, myself included thanks to Rose.

But for complete information with the PROPER lecture, a long time breeder of the species he wants to breed would be more helpful, IMO. For the most part, I've found emailing breeders results in a nice informative reply.

Most internet parrot forums, unless they are sponsored by a breeder, spend more time talking people out of breeding than they do offering help.

And most members of internet parrot forums, IMO, do not think any more parrots need to be bred.

This is just my personal opinion of course.

I agree with you soda and thankyou for clarifying what you had stated it cleared up a lot, i took it a different way i believe...

mikey i am so sorry and my heart goes to you.

'not researching.' - if i was NOT researching, then i would never have even asked about these things on here... i would have let them breed, and there would be parrot chicks right now.
that is what would have happened. So I don't think saying that I'm not doing any research is completely true....I am using this website for guidance, to steer me in the right direction to speak to those with knowledge greater than mine. And it has worked. The www is great. i was unware of certain things just like you would be in things you don't routinely do.. I have even asked a pet shop who didn't say anything against it...

i did this post on the same day as all the others. So its not that I ignored everyone's response on the first and still went ahead with the nest box...

I have taken it down as said before....and its great to feel backed into a corner...i never said I would still do it i never said you are wrong,, I nevr disagreed.
