Oliver the nanday conure (rescue), Suki the green cheek conure, Picabo the Hahn's Macaw, and Big Bird the dove
My nanday is missing when i got home to my apartment building. I left for only a few minutes to pick up something. While i waiting for the elevator, i could hear my nanday calling for me. we were only gone 20 minutes

my bird always stays at his cage. i noticed a perch was broken in his cage and that possible spooked him to fly out. my husband and i tore the place apart but there is no trace of him.

i have a very small dog, a shiba inu. my dog never attacks any of the birds. she plays with my green cheek all the time. if she did eat him, would there be feathers or blood? my nanday is pretty big and has a strong beak. my dog looks clean with no indication of a fight.

did she eat my bird? my husband thinks someone might have stolen the nanday, but that is crazy. i am devastated and have been crying for hours. my home is silent when i should hear squawking. :(

If your dog ate your bird you would now it... I think he is hiding somewhere and not making any noise cause something spooked him bad! I would look again but this time look everywhere and I mean everywhere in all nook and crannies! Im not saying your dog didnt eat him but you never know... If you dont find him within in 24 hours chances are the dog did eat him or someone did steal him... Good luck I hope you find him and give update so we know he is ok if you find him!

We're the doors open to the cage when you got home? Did the apartment look different when you got home? Did you leave any windows open?

If the dog ate a bird you would see feathers, blood and other, evidence. Your dog would most likely have wounds on him.
I'm so sorry your nanday is missing, I'm sure he will turn up.

If its dark in your apartment he will go to sleep...try turning all your lights on so he thinks its day time while you're searching. He may be more apt to make noise if he thinks its daylight.

hey, there! my nanday is one loud s.o.b. and when he knows i am home he sounds off. i left him with the cage open. he never ever flies off unless something spooked him. my windows and patio door was closed. my front door locked. my husband said anyone could open the patio door, though.

there are no feathers on the floor and no blood. my dog has white patches on her paws, mouth, face, and underside. it is the same coloring like a fox. she is absolutley clean. i even rolled her over and gave her a once over but she doesnt have feathers in her mouth or look like she got into something. i want to blame the dog for the missing bird but i dont think the dog did it.

my home shows no sign of a bird disturbance except for a broken perch. we even pulled out the ac unit and moved all the furniture out. what could have happened to cause a bird to disappear?

You said you live in an apartment. If hes so loud, do you have neighbors who have complained? did anyone see you leave? Is he flighted? how is the perch broken? does it look like it was done by force? if you really want to rule out the dog you may be able to take him to the vet and have them induce vomiting....i dont knowif theyd do it in this instance but i know they can get dogs to bring up objects theyve swallowed

Check closets and dark spaces.....its 1am..birds naturally will sleep if its dark....my birds are loud too when i come home but if its dark they are silent.

thanks all for replying! i turned all the lights on and we did a sweep of our home (it's a small home). i have been calling his name and trying not to scare him. we have our lights on and are going over every little hiding spot and area. it seems that he is not here. we are waiting a day before we notify the people that live in our building. i dont know, it sounds nuts alerting your neighbors of a stolen bird. i feel a little stupid and to blame for not putting him away.

my nanday would climb up to something if he couldnt fly. i just dont know how he could disappear.

Could an angry neighbor have taken him because hes loud? im so sorry...not knowing is the worst.

Is there a big gap under your door? My GCC can escape from my room even when the door is closed.

It doesnt sound like the dog ate him - there would be feathers and blood everywhere.

first thing in the morning go searching outside for him. have one person inside your apartment and one person outside and keep looking! don't give up and stay strong! given the possibility of him being stolen, write on the fliers how much he meant to you and maybe they would feel guilty and return him, you never know. I know it seems crazy alerting your neighbors, it could help find him. put fliers in the lobby, tell the doorman or receptionist, don't give up!

the perch snapped at the point of attachment to the cage in 2 pieces. actually, neighbors never complained because it is a pet building. i can hear all sorts of dogs barking when you walk through the hall. my conure was usually loud when most people are at work, too. you can hear my nanday in the hall.

im not sure what to do about the dog and the vet. i just dont suspect the dog since she is like 20 lbs. and more scared of birds.

If she was never aggressive before i think it would be a longshot...and if a dog attacks its usually messy especially since shes a smaller dog.

My friends German shepherd ate her two Cockatiels and that was really messy, Feathers and blood everywhere and there was lots of evidence in her waste too. I don't think your dog ate your bird there would be some evidence.

I hope you find him hiding somewhere. Good luck in the hunt. keep us posted.

Hope he turns up no I don't think the dog eat the bird you would know it from the mess. The bird wouldn't go easy. If the bird is scared he could be hiding any place behind the fridge or if it has a open part at the back under the fridge. Hope the poor guy turns up.

I'm sure the dog didn't do it....

Have you checked behind and under ALL furniture? Tip couches up, in case he's upsidedown underneath them... Do you have any couches etc with holes in them, where he could seek refuge...??? Curtains, look in the folds - front and back... Do you have books? Look behind those... The fridge?

I'm sure you have looked everywhere, but if the back door was closed, I think it's unlikely that someone just came in and took him...

Hope you find him...

thanks all for the responses. my husband and i have moved furniture, looked, and searched all over our 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. we stopped after a few hours and tried to make the home feel calm. i was hoping he would come out of hiding if it was quiet. i tried to go about the regular night routine, as some kind of lure.

my dog does not look like the "cat that ate the canary." i've had my dog for 5 years with my dove, whom i've had for 16 years, and there was never any altercation. you know, some dogs are just not bird predators; she is that kind of dog. doves are completely defenseless, too, not like a parrot.

how can i lose a bird? i feel so ashamed for losing him and i cant find him. this is the craziest situation i have ever been in. honestly, oliver, my nanday, would never go about the home scouting around. he never got into trouble like that. he would call out to us if something was wrong. no way could he escape under the front door or windows. all windows were closed, but the window/patio locks are questionable.

even my husband is pissed off about what happened. parrots do not disappear without a trace. could we have had a bird-napping? it is scary to think of stranger entering our home... it doesnt look like we had a crime here.

You can rule out the dog; you'd know if the dog ate your bird, it would not be pretty. Unfortunately, that's about all we can rule out. As others have noted, you have a few likely options:

A) Stolen.
B) Noisy, and a neighbour got to it.
C) Escaped.
D) Hiding.
E) Injured/dead somewhere in the flat.

Given that you've looked everywhere, the first three are more likely, the first two more so still.
