... I just started the tedious and determined task of cleaning The Beebs abode.
I took EVERYTHING out..perches,toys,bowls etc. I have the grate and bottom pan soaking in hot water in my tub and will use soap and a scrubby on those. His house has 7 perches,5 wooden of various sizes,a pvc perch and a short "roughy" to keep his nails in check.
They are also soaking in hot water.. with the wooden ones,I will scruff 'em up to clean any poo off them, then bake them in the oven a 300 degrees to make sure they thoroughly dry.
Since his house is too big for the tub,I will use my steam cleaner on it,scrub it as best as I can, steam clean again.

I'm thinking, then spray with a mixture of bleach and water.50/50,let it set, then take it to the car wash and high power wash it,bring it back, and steam clean once more..prolly gonna be an all day affair here  but I want it CLEAN!

So,what do I do with his many toys? None come in contact with his poo?

Any advice,tips,comments,woo-hoo's,atta boy's..will be greatfully and graciously accepted :D!

I don't know how dirty his house is, but I think you're crazy lol. I just clean Peanut's cage and toys with soapy water and a rag, then dry it.

I also have that Healthy Habitat spray that I got from the pet store and it's bird safe. I use that to clean her toys too and also my rabbit's cages. It works pretty good.

But, likely that you are not chasing a back to back infection that has hit Beebs. Sometimes getting crazy is just what is need to eliminate a possible hot spot!

Jim, remember that anytime you have bright Sunshine, take serious advantage of it. Much better than 300 degree oven temperature.

Hot Water Dawn dipping does wonders on the stringy things. Assure you rise very well! And once again, anytime you can dry in bright Sunshine, take advantage of it!

Enjoy!

The Sun will come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar on tomorrow - or something like that! :D

No Sun, use the oven!

I didn't know he had an infection.

I'd probably try to roll the cage outside (don't know how big it is) and scrub it down with half water and half Dial liquid antibacterial soap, rinse it well with a hose and then air dry outside if possible. I had to go in for an out patient surgery once and was told to shower with that Dial antibacterial soap first.

Ok...the initial cleaning is done...the easy parts lol..bowls,perches,toys,grate and tray have been taken care of.

The "first" cleaning of his house is also done..1.5 gallons of water for steam,a scrubby and sponge later, its time to hit the car wash..I think I'm going to for-go the bleach thing.
The hardest part was getting the steam wand inside his house, and the dirtiest part was where the grate and tray slide in. Each and every bar where steamed, then scrubbed and steamed again.

Now,its time to pack his house in the car and off to get it washed good, then back here to steam once again and assembly is reverse of disassembly...or something like that

Now, I don't have a sleep cage..what to do...what to do,with Beebers whilst I'm gone ...guess I'll have to put him in his go-to-the-doc carrier..he aint gonna like it lol...maybe I'll take him for the ride too so he doesn't freak out...you know how these tiel kids can get

I am curious, and please give me criticisms, but can anything be washed and dried in a dishwasher? I'm assuming without the usual dishwasher soap, but maybe with a bit of vinegar instead? My dishwasher has a very high temp selector, and a heated dry option. I'm thinking for toys and plastic items.

Your question was very simple to answer until one of our beloved members who is owned by an Amazon had a piece of plastic come loose found its way to the heat coil, melted and laid a heavy layer of toxic smoke in the home.

So, can they be used? Yup! But you need to be very careful what you are washing and that the size of the components are large enough to not find their way to the heat coil.

Regarding temperature, the standard temperature is more than hot enough for home use! Higher temperature must be compared to what you are putting into the DW. I do not recommend the high temperature wash nor the heat dry option! Anytime that Mother Nature provides bright Sunshine, use that as your drying source.

Excellent point Sailboat! No high temp and air dry is fine. I haven't burnt anything in the dishwasher, but theoretically it could happen. :)

I think this would be us you're referring to, but if not, this happened to us! We never had a dishwasher prior to buying this place and I thought "this will be great for cleaning off poop and grossness from toys/dishes/perches" since I wasn't planning to ever use it for dishes anyways. I had been running frequent cycles cleaning bird stuff for almost a year with 0 issues. One afternoon though, a toy part got loose then melted/burned during the cycle. Because the dishwasher is sealed, it didn't even really smell off until I opened it up and this awful acrid burning plastic smell came rolling out in a thick cloud. Our dishwasher has not been used since, it's and extra cabinet now. Never liked the thing in the first place and now simply don't trust it for anything besides storage. I've always hand washed dishes and reverted back to just hand washing or steam clean toys/perches etc... I'm less concerned about a few bacterias being left on his things from hand washing than I am burning plastic fumes. The jungle is not a sterile place, that's why a parrot has an immune system. Keep their things reasonably clean and they'll be fine.

I am the chief cook and bottle washer here...no automated dish thingie in this place!
Beebs place came out nice...I prolly could have spent a few more hours on it to make it look "new" ( I'm anile like that ). His wooden perches came out nice and dry/clean also,so I'm pretty sure any badness has been dealt with.
His CAV is a pretty darn busy place! I can't get an appointment til Tuesday of next week
I spoke to his doc,she understands my worries/concerns and will look deeper into his ailment when she see's him.

Right now,he is chattering in my ear and whistling his love songs to me...such a sweet little guy he is!

Woohoo!! :35: Great procedures at what you're doing in a thoroughly way, especially with a recent infection that Beebs has had, no risk not to be OCD to ensure very good cleanliness with our sensitive fids!
