We will be going out of town for the 4th of July weekend and plan on leaving Guavo with family. However, Guavo's cage is far too large to be dragged up and down the stairs (or even to fit into my car).

Taking the cage apart each time is certainly a hassle. Would it be wise to purchase a smaller cage to be used as a "hotel" for the weekend and other upcoming holidays to come? Or would the stress of being placed in a smaller cage, while we're away, be too great?

if his goin to get alot of out of cage time not a problem i dont think as its for a few days, but if his mainly gonna be in that new small cage, maybe the exta effort will be worth it

personnally i'd make the extra effort

I should mention that he will not be getting out-of-cage time. I am leaving him with my grandparents, who are home most of the day, and will spend a lot of time talking to him and being around him. However, they will not be handling him.

big cage then, lots of toys he enjoys and some treats your grand parents can pass him through cage bars :) he might not mind not gettin out of cage time, as his in a new enviroment, but think best in the big cage, an nothing worse then comin home to a grumpy bird! an enjoy your trip :)

oh you could look on ebay for a used cage?? of a similar size? near where you live on a pick up option to save on p&p

I would check craigslist and backpage over ebay simply because they are designed for local purchaces.

I want to make sure our little guy is happy while we're gone. I think taking the cage apart will be worth it! Thanks!!

I bought a "travel cage" which is collapsible and still appropriately sized for a B&G macaw. Because like you, his main cage was too much trouble to haul in and out. It is collapsed and stored away when I don't need it.
