Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
Just a random question that I thought of and may get a couple funny stories.

Has anyone here ever seen their Conure hopping, much like a Caique does. My previous conure would quite often hop around his cage normally he would jump from his flat perch to his food bowl and back for a couple minutes, and whenever he chased after a ball on the floor he would start running then it would turn into a little hopping motion, I'm assuming it's due to excitement but it was a surprising thing to see. Even just the running as he was fully flighted. It always made me laugh when he would start hopping

My aunts green cheek hops it is so cute. It is a female too. My little once has not done it yet.

Caiques seem to have a tendency to hop. I think it's very cute.

My sun conure does not hop sadly. The closest he gets to it is the plump grandma waddle as I call it. He reminds me of a plump old lady wading in water with her skirt up, of course there's no water with my bird, just seems that way.

I think a lot of different birds will hop on occasion. My female ekkie will hop across the top of her cage when she is chasing her evil rattle ball, or when she is just otherwise wound up.

Skittles did a LOT of hopping back in the aviary at the pet store I got him at. That, and rolling over. It's how he won me over.

He doesn't roll over so much anymore- though he does lay on his back sometimes when he is really relaxed (usually on my shoulder).

But the hopping thing is still a thing with him. When he gets excited (usually when he REALLY wants something) he will hop. Usually outside his cage. He will 'sorta' hop inside his cage when he is excited but he doesn't let go of the perch, so it isnt technically hopping since he is still attached to the perch and it bobs with him. Sometimes I worry he'll break the darn things.

Jonesy, my goffin 'too was a good hopper, usually when he was excited about something.

I was going to do an original post but I try to search first.

Is there any way to train a bird to hop? I love my GCC just the way he is, but I'd like to see him hop like the youtube videos of caiques hopping around like maniacs. I guess this is a continuation of LordTriggs original post...has anyone found a way to train hopping esp. on a conure?

My suns don't hop around, only perch to perch or onto my finger. When they chase things they are always in the "flying V" formation like a pack of velociraptors. They would never bite me, but oh man I feel sorry for what ever toy I am holding in my hand for them to chase. If popsicle sticks had guts... it would be everywhere.

My three and a half month old Green Cheek (I've had him for about a month) has recently starting hopping from perch to perch or from perch to suspended toys. My wife saw him doing it this afternoon and commented on it, but he actually started it about three days ago.

I kind of mean the straight up and down hop, not to get anywhere, but to just make a commotion.
