Hello,
My names Amanda and our African Grey is called Homer. We bought her as an 18 month old male 15 years ago. However 2 years ago she laid 2 eggs so she is now definitely a girl! Not the most conventional way to sex a parrot but conclusive. It took us all longer to adapt to calling her she and good girl than it did for her to learn to say both! She is now the epitome of the modern parrot and at ease with her sexuality regardless of what we call her or she calls herself! We can only be sure that she is at least 16 years old but who knows?
Homer has changed loyalty from my husband as her 'favorite ' to me. She arrived when our children were 16, 12 and 10. By all accounts she is very good for an African Grey and allows both my husband and me to handle her. She makes gooey eyes at our 27 year old when he visits and went through a phase of disliking blondes which was tricky with both my daughter and daughter in law being fair!
She also hated me with wet hair and one occasion landed at the vets when she dive bombed me whilst I had hair dye on! She got it in her eye and was suitably quietened when in order to administer basic, instinctive first aid I held her under a running tap to flush it our! No lasting damage though. It was quite a story explaining what had happened to the vet!
I guess like all parrot owners there are stories galore!
I will post photos but Homer has probably as many IT skills as me so it might be a while!
Homer is very talkative and mischievous. She loves dropping me in it when shes out in her aviary shouting at herself in my voice! The neighbors all know exactly whats been going on at our house.
We live in the SK8 postcode and could do with getting to know other parrots and their owners in our area with a view to sharing parrot sitting. Our children are all away from home now and we could do with some help when we go away and could offer the same.
