Hi there! I am the proud mom of a male Sun Conure named Skittles. He's about 2 years old and we've had him for over a year. I obsess over taking pictures of him, finding him exciting new toys and perches, learning about his behavior, and just all-around playing with him. He is my first bird and having him has actually made me realize how much of a crazy bird lady I am inside!
He is clipped for now, but I like to grow out his wings just enough to make short flights to get from his perch to the couch or get out of the way of a dog. I still live with my parents, so I don't want him fully flighted around the three dogs, two cats, and numerous ceiling fans we share the house with. Once I move into an apartment however, I fully intend to let him be fully flighted.
Aside from stepping up and being good about going in his cage and travel cage, I've been neglectful in training him like I should, but hope to change this. My main goals at the moment is to get him completely relaxed around my hands (for example, he won't let me pick him up or let me flip him on his back yet) and get him wearing his harness so I can go and take him with us when we walk the dogs during warmer seasons.
Being the male he is, he is a jealous, territorial bird and will puff up and hiss when he sees someone new, especially if they approach him. If I happen to be the one he's on, he'll bite me about as hard as he can. I usually just tell people to ignore him and he'll calm down. It takes about a week or so of constant exposure to someone before he doesn't do the "angry dance" around them and will step up for them and even crawl in their shirt. He also hates fire (I used a lighter once and he FREAKED), feet and, ironically, will try to bite you when he gets agitated by the sounds from the game "Angry Birds."
With people he knows he is great, playful and snuggly as can be!
Yeah, I know TL;DR.
