Red Lored Amazon-Xavier
Green Cheek Conure - Eddie
Hello, everyone!
I'm Jacquie, have really enjoyed threads I've read and unfortunately hit the wrong button regarding my introduction.
I have an inherited 19 year old Red Lored Amazon, Xavier and a rescued green cheek conure, Eddie. Both talk and I can spend more time with them as the kids are now out of the nest, so to speak.

Birds, I've learned are absolutely awesome! They are constantly learning and it's hysterical what they pick up. Eddie mimics me typing in my phone- just started that ruse.

The reason I kind of jumped the gun, so to speak, is that ebay has a cage that I think might be perfect for him, although he is extremely particular - yep, 4 cages in the garage.

I inherited Xavier , who was being fed outdoor black sunflower seeds, dirty cage etc. My heart went out to him and, while we have a ways to gi, he is hysterical though needs more training.
Regardless, this is a cage size question. Between the two of them talking, it feels like the kids never left!

I could use your help - I've looked on so many sites and each is different regarding bar spacing for Red Lored Amazon's.
EBay only has a few more and could really use some advice.

Could you help and I thank you for your assist.

Is 5/8 " bar with acceptable for him? Also, what size cage do you recommend?

He needs more room than his current cage.

I would love to place the order for him so I can get him out of the cramped cage he is in so he can belt out the Andy Griffith theme song more times than I can count! : )
Thank you!

Jacquie

Welcome!
I hope some Amazon experts will chime in...
But meanwhile...
I'm glad you're here! You have the kind of energy and open-mindedness we love!

Welcome to Parrot Forums and the Amazon Forum! The place where Amazon's Rule!

Not all Amazons have a joy for things that just show-up! With four in the garage, unless you consider a different approach, you will likely end-up with many more!

New things show-up from a distances and with time move into a general assembly area. In the assembly area (commonly) very near where the cage will set, the boxes, slowly open-up. If your Amazons likes to chew cardboard, use that as a method of providing or letting the Amazon open the boxes. With the pieces and parts out and around the area and your Amazon has climbed up and on the pieces, its time to assemble the cage 'with' the help of your Amazon.

This could take a couple of days or several weeks, since it is all done at the rate of acceptance of your Amazon.

BAR Spacing: I like 1/2" (50 mm) spaces, but up to 5/8" (63 mm) will work with most Amazons. With your Amazon close by. Determine the spacing between your Amazons eyes (forehead)! FYI: Large can result in your Amazon hanging itself! Smaller is always better in that regard.

CAGES: I buy from BirdCages4Less. Price range very near to others. But they only sell Cages and things related to cages. That means that shipping know how many boxes and what boxes go with what Cages.

- I target only Cages with full height front doors. Once you use one, it will become monitory in your World also.

- I like play tops and greatly dislike those pretty Cage tops that open and end-up damaging legs, wings, etc...

- Smallest Size: 23" +/- deep x 34" +/- wide x 60" +/- high.

If you have not read the two 'Sticky' Threads at the Top of the Amazon Forum, I would strongly recommend that you do so! NOTE: In the Second Thread of 'I Love Amazons -... (which is a huge Thread with over 30 Segments), there is a Segment that speaks to Cages. Well worth your time to read that Segment prior to buying, yet another Cage.

Again, Welcome to Parrot Forums!
