I'm partial to birds and cats. I foster Neo-natal kittens up for adoption. In the past I have fostered budgies and several Cockatiels. Found great homes.
I'm new to the Parrot Owner's Community. I'm a member of the Budgie Owners Community. I rescued an abused budgie a little over a year ago. It has taken this long just to be able to slowly put her food and treats into her cage without stressing and squawking.
Four months ago I adopted a Fancy Conure from a pet store that posted about her/him. At just 3 months old, it was teased in the cage by adults, and the cage was smacked around by small children. He/She was also getting the claws slammed in the food doors and hit by the children while perching on the cage rails. They fed it the incorrect food for Conures, never let it have a bath, rarely gave it fresh water or food. No toys. Locked in a cage for small birds (finch cage). A Good Samaritan let the local animal control know what was going on and the bird was taken away and given to an employee at a pet store. The abusers also had several other smaller birds treated the same way.
In the past 4 months of ownership, this conure has a complete turn around with the love and care it needs! He/She still won't let us hold her and she won't step-up to perch on our fingers or arms, but tiny steps each day will do wonders. She loves to be fed snacks by fingers, give head-butts to our hands (watching our male rescue cats do this to us) and keeps us entertained with her silly play!
Today we have our first vet visit and it'll have the toe clip sent in for DNA testing.
We made a great choice in adopting (instead of fostering) the budgie and conure, even with cats in the house. It makes me smile whenever I greet them in the mornings. We supervise when home and our little budgie and conure are locked in the bird/office room at night and when away.
