Hi everyone, I'm Nikki. I have a 5 1/2 year old blue and gold macaw named Louie. And a 3 month old sun conure named Elsa. LOUIE was a rescue from a home that was beating him with a perch. I have had him for almost 9 months. He does not like new people to come to the house, only one person is able to handle him, and most of the time he doesn't allow that. If anyone has any ideas that I can use to help gain my louie's trust so we can interact with him more..thank you so much.:blue1::orange:

Patience, consistency and going slow...actually, going at Louie's pace...since he was beaten, you're basically going to be starting from square one and will need to go pretty slow.....good luck.....

Sorry, I neglected to welcome you to the forums.....Welcome Nikki & congrats on rescuing Louie.....

Thank you very much. We are letting Louie pick the pace of what he wants to do.

Welcome to the forum! I have a Blue and Gold macaw named Bella, I've had her for 3 years now. She was somewhat friendly when I bought her but it took about 6 months for her to settle in. This past winter she really became affectionate and easy to handle. Now for toenail trimming I can just set her on my knee and grab her claw and start trimming. Flip her over, pull her wings out etc. Blue and Golds are the best! Once you earn Louie's trust you will have the greatest bird! It just takes time and patience :)

Hello Nikki and welcome!
I also want to thank you for rescuing Louie, and getting him away from that situation.
I agree with the previous posters, time and patience:)
I'd love to see pics of your Louie and Elsa!

Hey Nikki, welcome to the forums! So sad that poor Louie went through so much before he found you. Patience and understanding goes a long way with an abused parrot. You're right to match Louie's pace until he let's you know he's gained some confidence and built some trust. Sitting close and talking in a soft voice or reading is a good way to let him learn your voice and body language. Good luck with your little sweetheart. I'd also love to see Louie and Elsa pics.
