Hi All, My name is Suzannah, I live in Maine with my two horses, a spittypants llama named Shama, 2 geese, a gargantuous gang of giggling guinea hens, one cockatoo named Wally, two tiels, Gabby and Lovie, two white doves, Zeb and Zelba, and a rescue amazon we named Petey. This orange wing amazon was found in my neighbor's yard underneath her birdfeeder. She called me, and asked me to come get the "parakeet". I went to see what she was all upset about, and the "keet", ended up being a orange wing amazon LOL
I told her she was a bit mistaken, she was afraid for the bird, as it was november and cold up here! I was able to get him, and I've been nursing him every since. I have some questions though, as I've never had a amazon before, so if I might ask some of you that have more experience than I do with this type bird i'd be forever GRATEFUL!

Yes, please first make every effort to find his owners. Post ads on craigslist and in the local newspaper, and call all the local vets, especially avian ones. You may not find his owner, especially if they've given up looking now thinking he didn't make it through the winter, but undoubtedly if you do, they will want him back. Thank you though for taking him in and helping him.

Just to be on the safe side though in your ads, don't say what kind of bird it is. That can weed out people who might try to claim it even though it isn't theirs. I would just say I found a parrot.

Welcome to the forum though! I have an amazon also named Petey:)

Oh, and some people won't be able to read the red writing. Those with red/green color blindness usually see it as gray and gray against white is very hard to read.

gee, i didn't expect to get jumped on for helping this bird. Obviously, whomever HAD the bird did not care for it, because of the condition he was in when I found him. I did not post everything in the introductory post due to time constraints, and the hour was late when I joined this forum.
I took Petey to an avian vet, and he was severely emaciated, had lice, had not eaten in a VERY long time, never had his wings nor nails done, and it was painfully obvious to both myself and the vet that whoever had him, did NOT care for him. At least not in the way that we, meaning myself and the vet think he should have been cared for. So in defense of myself regarding the posts on "claiming the bird as my own", I will claim him again and again instead of giving him back to somebody who so woefully did not care for him. I am also in an animal rescue league and have seen animals AND birds tossed out because people can no longer either afford them, don't want them, etc. But hey, I"m not going to go on and on . I just thought this would be a friendly forum to join, ask some questions about amazons and perhaps learn and make some new friends along the way. I think I was wrong though.
Forgive me for that thought. Oh and I did check the bird 911 sites, and nobody had listed an amazon matching this guy as missing or lost, or stolen. I don't need a book slammin me aside the head to figure out someone just didn't care nor want him.
Again, sorry for joining this friendly forum, I"ll go it with the vet and other bird friends. I resent very much the attitude i get from several posts regarding my intro.
Suzannah.
