4 year old B/G Macaw
Hello everyone, I'm new to the board, just joined today and thought id say hi. I own a female blue and gold macaw named Kyra:blue1:. I took her in from a friend of a friend who due to family health issues couldn't give her enough attention (They gave me her and the king cage for free which was very generous). Besides a parakeet years back, this is my first exotic bird but I have owned reptiles, amphibians, small rodents, etc. I've had her since around June and she is doing pretty well. Her squawking and screaming was absolutely terrible when i first got her. Her old owners used to yell at her and talk back when she would squawk therefore encouraging her to do it more. Since I've had her with me, she squawks a lot less then she did (unless i leave her unattended with the door to her room open which is strange). However, I'm still having difficulty getting her to socialize with other people in my apartment. She is very partial to girls since her previous owner was a girl, but with a lot of other guys she is nervous. I mean, when i first took her in it did take several months to gain her trust. anyway, enough rambling. It is definitely a learning experience, but i am enjoying it. I posted some pictures of her and if anyone wants to know more i'd be glad to talk haha.

Looking forward to participating soon

-Mark

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum, Congratulations on adopting Kyra, you will soon find that birds are much different than other pets, as it is we that are owned by our fids (fids=feathered kids), not the other way around ;),there are many of us here also owned by macaws so have a look around, get to know other members, have fun and enjoy your stay :)

Hello Mark, and welcome to the forum. Have a look around, there's plenty to learn here. And if you need to ask any questions, feel free!

Congratulations on your new feathered baby! She's gorgeous. Looking forward to getting to know both of you. :)

Flap flap tweet tweet welcome
Kyra is a beautiful bird and lucky to have found a good home

Keep up with being patient as it sounds your doing things right
she probably will start getting better socialized with other people once she is better bonded to you and knows she is safe

Welcome Mark..
Kyra is beautiful. Sounds like you are taking the right steps to make her know she is loved and can trust you.
