Taking this away from my main thread of polyuria, because it's a separate worry (even though linked in). Hope that's ok.

My Sennie had a blood test last Monday to try and work out why he's so polyuric. He had an anaesthetic (I don't know why either) and they took his blood from under his wing. I thought it was usual to take it from the neck but my vet went for under the wing (he's avian qualified).

Anyway, I was looking under his wing tonight and it's black. There's an area the size of a large grape (bearing in mind, he's only a small bird) - from in his armpit to spreading out onto his wing - that is completely black and a little swollen. I rang the vets and they said it sounds like a hematoma, from not having pressure applied after the blood was taken, and not to let him pick at it and to bring him in Monday. I'm back on Monday anyway, for a urinalysis - so the vet will see him then.

Does anyone know if this is dangerous, or if it needs any treatment? Of course I'll keep an eye on him, so he doesn't bother at it, but I can't see him when he's in his night cage and covered. I'm neurotic that he's going to bleed to death or get a blood clot, or something. It looks so painful, poor baby. All this and they still haven't discovered why he has polyuria (going to go update my main thread).

Thank you for any advice or knowledge.

Hematomas aren't dangerous (unless he continues to actively bleed). Hopefully the area is not warm and increasing in size. If you've ever had one from a bad stick before they can be quite sensitive so he might baby the area. It should resolve on its own with time...your vet may put on a little bit of a compressive bandage on it to help but if he won't tolerate it that well it can go away on its own. I would keep him quite nonetheless and not let him fly around so that the area has time to heal on its own.

Taking blood from the wing is also pretty routine :)

Hope your guy is feeling better soon.

Thank you so much - that's put my mind at rest a little. :)

Keeping him quiet however is easier said than done. The excessive hyperactivity is a daily struggle. :/
