Hi,

I've had Polly for 2 years now. Her previous owner gave her to me as he got a dog and she was terrified of him. Her previous owner also smoked a lot. When I got her I noticed she has quite large nostrils, a rough beak and noisy breathing and has been the same since I've had her, is she like this because of her previous owner smoking or is it something else?

Thanks.

Poor thing. Has she had a recent exam by an avian vet?

Greetings, and welcome to the forums!! Polly is beautiful, but her nostrils do appear large.

If the noisy breathing is near constant, an evaluation by an avian vet is critical. Parrots by nature cover illness more than most creatures, and when symptoms are very noticeable a disease process can be advanced. Large nostrils and a rough beak don't trigger an immediate connection, and that is why Polly ought to be seen by a professional soon!

Can you share with us her general diet and activity level?

Ah thank you. Any idea where I can find a professional to look at her? Do I just got to any vet? She's very active, she is out of her cage every day playing around, I feed her seeds, dried fruit and try to give her as much apples, bananas as I can but she doesn't really like that sort of stuff. Thanks.

Ok, first, do some diet research here, need to get off seeds, except as an occasional treat.

Secondly, and Avian vet is a specialty vet, so you'll need to look around to find one.

Lastly welcome to the forum, and congrats!

I have an Ekkie and we can hear her breath. We have been working with the vet on it. He explained to me you shouldn't be able to hear them breath, also to look at their tail feathers and if you see them move when breathing, there is a respiratory issue. Definitely find an avian vet in your area and get her checked out.

Good for you, for reaching out!

Welcome and be welcomed. As some have said....first thing, to start, is diet change. Off the seeds, gradually, and on to veggies (look up chop and how to make it, it's just chopped up veggies) and fruits. There are good and bad of both. Then use Google and find an avian vet in your area, if you complete your profile, we may be able to tell you a good one near you. Does she have plenty of toys in and out of the cage? Please stay with us and keep posting about Polly!

Yes - tell us your location & some of us might know an avian vet in your area. Welcome to the forum!

Poor baby. Yes, get to an avian vet. Research online who is available near you and then ask in the forum which Avians you found might be used by members here. You can also check their reviews.

Greys are like all birds, sensitive to smoke. I don't know if the nostrils being larger are a side effect of smoking or not but it wouldn't surprise me. Sounds as if he is good natured. They are my favorite bird, if one can be called favorite, I find them to bounce back most of the time.

I also agree to begin changing the diet. It will really change many things after some months. Chopping veggies and fruits together (no onions, avocado or any seeds to be safe). Generally I have rarely seen a grey that hates peas, corn (fresh best but frozen ok no salt or spices added) or some kinds of fruits. At first you could mix a small amount of seed into your chop and slooooowly decrease the amount you put into the chop until there is no more seed.

Hope that helps! All the best!

Agree! Find an avian vet asap and have Polly checked. One night my TAG was acting fine..eating,singing,talking,playing. The VERY NEXT MORNING I found her on her perch, head hung low, breathing labored, and wobbly on her perch. I rushed her to her avain doc and 30 minutes later,Smokey was gone :02: I had NO IDEA she was ill, untill that very sad morning. That's how well they can hide their illnesses..they have to in the wild,to fool any potential predators.

As far as veggies/fruit,LeakP is correct. Smokey just LOVED corn and peas! Had to have them warmed up first though  And banana and pineapple chunks were her most fav fruit. I could see the glee on her face and in her eyes,as her little beaky just squeezed the juice from the pineapple chunks and her tongue just lapping up the juice.
