Help with untamed macaws

Hello all,

I am new to the forums. So my family and I have moved in to a house that belongs to my husbands uncle. They had 4 macaws (about 10 years old) in a room that was especially built for them that has glass walls and is attached to the home. You must enter the "room" from the outside and there is a large glass where you can view the birds from the inside of the house. I'm writing all this just to give everyone and idea of where they live.

So they have left these birds here saying that they are going to build a cage or place for them in their new place. But now they are saying that if we don't want them then we should give them away. The decision was made quickly because last week I had gone in to clean the room and one of the parrots got out. This particular parrot is always trying to get out. The parrot flew out and ended up in the neighbors backyard. They were not too happy about this and called the person who is in charge of the leash laws and things of that sort in the town. We had told them someone would get the bird, but they couldn't wait. So many people were around that they bird eventually flew to high up on a nearby tree on their property and eventually flew away somewhere and has not come back. While this was happening someone also decided to call ASPCA (sp?) and now they are also coming on Tues. to see what condition the other parrots are in. The reason ASPCA was called is because this particular bird that flew out is missing some of his feathers on his torso (due to the frustration and boredom Im sure). So the whole reason why my husbands family is willing to let them go now is because someone is involved and the parrots could be taken away..Sorry this is so long, but I want to do whats best for these parrots.

Since we moved my husband and I have not done much more than feed them, keep their cage clean and talk and whistle to them. The family never dealt with them much because the owner died and everyone has always been afraid of them.

My husband and I are clueless as to how about doing things. We are taking them (try to) to a vet next week and then we don't know if we should give them away or keep them.

We have had pets before but never birds. We know its a big responsibility and could keep them we just wish someone could point us in the right direction on their care. If we could find someone who would care for them and treat them right that would be great too. They have never really been handled, especially after the owner died.

I'm located near the NYC area if anyone is interested or knows of someone who is in having them or coming by to see them and help us out please send me a message.

Open to suggestions.....

Thanks,
Michelle

Have you attempted in finding the macaw by posting ads? Outside of that door needs a partition built on with a door added, even a outside dog kennel would work with a side attached so there's a area where you can enter before going into the bird room so even if they got out from the house door they can't fly out. Birds can be worked with and macaws are very social animals. They just need the attention and to be worked with. Have you gotten them some toys? A vet check would be great to do! Some vets are willing to come out to your house if you have multiple animals that needs to be checked on and your unable to catch them for some reason. They might charge you extra to make the trip, but I'm sure that might be easier for you. IF you can't find one to come out, you will have to attempt to bring them, IF you could find someone who is knowledgeable of Macaws to help you would be great!!!!

As with the ASPCA, as long as you have vet visit, keep their house clean, Clean water, feed them, plenty of toys, etc you should be fine. What are you feeding them anyway?

Hi,

Thanks for the response. We have bought some hanging toys for them and right now we give them a mix by kaytee. I also give them nuts and fruits. I will try going in more and talk to them I hope we can get them to the vet without a problem. I asked them if they would consider a house visit, but they only do so when the animal is too sick to come out.

We have not posted any ads yet.

You should try to consider changing their seed mix to Pellets, fruits and veggies, and nuts as treats. But learn as you go since you just started this, stick with seeds for now until you understand them then start the process of switching over. If you could find someone with knowledge of Macaws that can help you to get them to the vet would be great!
