Picked up a baby green cheek conure on Monday, he already loves coming out the cage, obviously a bit too much because when I put him back he goes crazy chirping and trying to squeeze through the bars anywhere he can possibly go! What should I do ?

Has he plenty to occupy him, ie toys in his cage? Do you return him with a treat?

If he is anywhere near being able to try and squeeze through his cage bars then it kinda says that you have the wrong cage for him? If you put up as asked by David the measurements of the spacing between the bars that will give a better clue? I presume you have named him Houdini?

It's a 3/4 inch gap between the gaps and yeah I might have to rename him Houdini ! It's only when I put him back and I'm in the room still, when I leave the room he jumps back to his perches up the top, but when I'm in the room he's on the bottom of the cage trying to squeeze through even though he can't put his head through

Also yes he has enough toys and every time I put him in he gets a nibble of millet which I use as his treat

Put a chair by his cage and sit on that for a few minutes, see if that settles him? Obviously likes the excitement of you being around?

When I get him out now and try put him back he runs up my arm and flys onto my shoulder and then refuses to step up...

Sounds like he just enjoys being with you, not necessarily a bad thing. How long do you have him out before you put him back in his cage? Maybe if you plan longer play times with him he will be more willing to go back for a treat. Also, if he is disobedient on your shoulder, I would avoid letting him up there until he will step up when asked. One more thing, do you ever ask him to step up off your shoulder when he's not gong into his cage? That could be a reason why he refuses to step up if he associates it with always gong back into his cage.

Yeah he does really enjoy being with me! I have him out for like 15- 30 minutes aokag I ill get him out for longer! Yeah I get him off my shoulder before going into cage should I change that and I can't help it not letting him on my shoulder climbs up my arm and flys on to my shoulder (wings are clipped)

if he is perched on your index finger you can put your thumb over his feet to keep him from climbing up your arm.
which helps them also get used to you touching their feet.
(abba lets me clip her nails with a toenail clipper and I am really trying to make it sound like I deserve the credit for that.)

When you do have him on your shoulder though and want him off, you can sort of drop your shoulder and make it unstable -while offering your hand as a stable perch.

Big verbal and treat rewards for going back in cage.

maybe put him in the cage and take him out multiple times so he understands that going in the cage is only a temporary situation?

always offer a treat when they go in the cage

when they're out put them in the cage sometimes but leave the door open

play with them in the cage

do those 3 things and he should start enjoying the cage more. Right now the only social fun happy time he gets is when not in the cage, so why would you want that fun to end?

Wow okay that's a lot of useful information thank you very much!! I will try all of this out and see how it goes

Also understand that conures are the kings or attention seeking behavior...they will make themselves look in absolute peril in order to manipulate you into letting them come out and be with you. Like you described in your second post.

Don't be afraid to put him on the cage and leave the door open, if his wings are clipped and you are home you can at least judge how brave he is and how far he will wander. This is good information to have. All the other advice is also good.
