Hi everyone I am new to the page and not too sure on how to start a new conversation but I bought a new budgie 2 weeks ago and I am battling to get him used to me he won't really do much I have been doing research on everything I am close to getting him used to my hand but one day he is ok then the next day he will be very scared of me I tried the hand on cage technique and done the talking any advice on what more to do?

patience patience patience patience patience patience patience patience PATIENCE!

big of patience goes into it. Remove ANY idea of time frame you have, he sets the pace. If he is okay one day then flapping around the next then you are moving too fast, you need to push up to the point they suddenly get tense, then back it off by a notch. When you say he does nothing do you mean not play or anything? What toys have you got in the cage? Also just in case you do try switching dowel perches out for branch like perches, they're much better for their feet

its very early---just get him used to you right now. talk to him etc, do quiet things by the cage...see if you can feed treats from hand. Don't force it. BIRDS ARE SOOOO SLOW.

Are you letting it out of its cage? Couldn't touch my bird for 1 full month...Didn't step up for 3.

I found working with Cloudy went better outside of the cage, still took two months for him to comfortable with me. Clear and I are only in the stand on a stick stage.

I haven't tried to do anything physically to him I won't force him to take from my hand yet I just leave my hand in the cage for 5 minutes and I talk while changing his food or cleaning his cage I have wooden perches 1has half a piece of the sandpaper stuff you buy so they can sharpen their beaks so forth I have 3 toys in the cage I removed the mirror as I read they can become well too attached to their reflection I have spray millet for treats and everyday I try an apple or carrot just so he can mix his food up a bit well when I used to come home he would climb down when I called some days he won't budge from the same spot until I close him up and then he'll come down and eat he was also very traumatized by the pet shop so he didn't have a good start. I do not try let him out as he panics so I read every night and leave the cage door open for him I also play some budgie sounds I found on YouTube that seems to make him happen he runs up and down his perch bobs his head and sings and talks with it I do spend plenty of time with him but I won't try any physical contact yet

instead of leaving your hand in the cage, leave your hand on the outside of the cage, if he's happy with that then offer a treat through the bars, and continue on until he begins rushing over to you when your hand is placed against that cage

Treats......
