four snakes- china, dip & stick, and Grand Chahee-
Grrr! I just visited a friend, (who invited me to visit her next door neighbour) I wasent in there vary long when I noticed they had a budgie and a teal in a 40 gal reptile tank, lid on.

he said he had the teal for 5 years and the budgie for 2, apparently the snake he had for 7 years froze so he got rid of the cages and put his birds togather, he said they are happy in the cage ( I left quickly, the sight upset me) they have vary low branches and I dont think he really cleaned the tank before he put them in there, the budige is up againt the far wall and seems to stick to "His area" nither birds seem to make much noise and they look alittle ragged, like they are moth eaten, could they have mites?

The man said they sometimes play with eachother but when they do, theres a lot of screaming and sometimes alittle blood cause they play hard. I dont believe him, but I dont know how to go about telling him he needs his birds in a bigger tank if hes going to keep them in a fish tank, or real cages.

Thats terrible :(

If the stuffy, dirty fish tank wasn't bad enough......

Not really sure if the moth eaten look is a result of mites, but if the tank wasn't properly sanitized they could have gotten them from the snake.

He should at least be told that blood mixed with screaming isn't playing.

the tank was clean, and he did have a layer of news paper under a thick layer of corncob shavings, he said he cleaned it about once a week, but they have two sets of food and water dishes, its like they have a devider between them, yet they dont.

he said he had a picture of the teal sitting on the budige, (I refused to look at it, he seemed to think I was vary funny eventhough I was vary distressed) talking to him was like talking to a pothead, he wouldent listen, 20 something and a know it all who is paying his own way threw collage and working ect, he knew what he was doing.

he also said they groomed eachother, saying thats probily why they looked so ragged, they were always "playing" though I have to say I didnt see any of that while I was there. the poor birds didnt seem happy at all. he did tell me that they never scratched, and if they had mites, then it wasent from the snake, because his snake lived on a rug, he didnt believe in mulch for snakes. (because he fed it in the tank)

I have to say, thats one friend of my friend who I am not going to visit again.

Sadly I think even the snake was unhappy. I have always had snakes and none of them would have liked living on carpet. True, they sell it for them but they need to feel safe and carpet.....not natural. And to hear they were fed in the same tank, depending on the speices that could have been dangerous they can associate food with your hand :) or he didn't handle it that often.

yea, well he said the snake was nice, and he misses it, as I said before, it froze, (he cant miss it that much, if he allowed it to freeze) and he says the birds are happy. (my eyes told me diffrently) and wouldent listen to anything I said, witch was why I left so quickly.

He had seemed nice at first, going in the highrise apartment building, everything was nice and EVERYTING pure white, including the carpet, he had a peach colored couch (dont ask me where he got it) the tank setup would be nice... if it were a bearded dragon, but the low 40 gal tank didnt even give them enough room to flap... well the budige could flap, but the teals tail was draging on the floor, his head just an inch from the mesh. I tried to talk him into at least putting the tank on its side, to give more head space but he said the corncob bedding would fall out if he opened the lid.

Its fustrating, Really! How can I help the poor birds?! someone.. go in and steal the birds for me please!!

approach is everything, and the problem is, this kind of ignorance is rather wide spread, (unfortunately) and in my mind, these kind of ppl do not deserve to care for another living being as they have no empathy. they will form excusses for what ever in there minds an they will always be in the right. i've a feeling his put birds in the tank to keep the mess in a confind area and possibly save on space??

get him to join forum, only an idiot will continue doing what he is doing to these poor creatures, after reading what we all do and how we all keep our birds, within our means and with the birds best interest at heart

yea, I doubt he will join, I didnt see a computer in his tiny place, and I got the feeling that he really wouldent listen anyway, even if he did get some real information. his building was nonsmoking (thankgod, poor birds) otherwise he would be adding more stress to their lives, he went up to the roof to smoke, (I had left, my friend stuck around, probily soothing his feelings because I was upset.. I didnt really leave in a friendly manor) and I didnt see him leave.

My Friends KNOW I am like this! I had worked at a shelter for 2 years! Why do they do this stuff to me?! GAH, yea, I dont think Ill be visiting friends anymore. at least until they relize that I really dnt want to be hooked up with anyone they know.

Thankyou Everyone for hearing me vent, I feel better talking with people who accually care for their animals.

Poor babies! Maybe report him to the humane society??

I thought about it, but he keeps the birds clean, and they are his property and they arnt suffering from anything else.. I made sure he was feeding and watering clean food and water. it is Walmart bird food, but he has them in seprate bows, I cant really report him without anything happening, even a wellfare check wont render much, they arnt being neglected, they are just being kept in conditions that we (this forum dosent approve) the birds can flap and strech. so the poor birds are kinda SOL.
